Re: NFC West Offseason Ticker

1/29 Rams Hire Al Roberts to replace Ligashesky as ST Coach
Av's take: Roberts was the Bengals ST coach until 2002. He has coached High School since. Previously, he coached with Linehan at University of Washington. While I know nothing about Roberts' abilities, I can't help but see some of the old Martz "cronyism" in this move.

I think there is a big difference here; Marmalade was incompetent and accomplished nothing in AZ, while Roberts did a good job in Cincy with their ST.

In his five seasons with the Bengals before '02, Roberts' unit fared much better. They scored seven special teams TDs on returns between 1997-01, and Tremain Mack made the Pro Bowl in 1999 as a kickoff returner

Roberts also worked in the NFL for Arizona (1994-95); the New York Jets (1991-93); Philadelphia (1988-90); and the Houston Oilers (1984-85). He was with Philly for the 1989 Thanksgiving game against Dallas, when Cowboys kicker Luis Zendejas accused then-Eagles head coach Buddy Ryan of putting a "bounty" on him. In other words, offering money to any Eagles player who injured Zendejas.

Seems to me he knows a little something about ST.
