You could tag him for three years, but what purpose would that serve? He likely would become disgruntled, hold out, or demand a trade by that time. The last thing you want is a disgruntled starting QB.
The best thing obviously would be to sign him long term, but if for some reason a deal can't be reached this year, I'd entertain the thought of trading him next year while he has peak value.
