Actually, I don't believe that's how it works. The signing bonus is included in the $51M estimate. If you look at NFLPA.ORG for the salaries Jones is going to be making in his seven year deal, they total $31,500,000. The difference is made up in the bonus money. So when a site reports that a player signed a deal for seven years and $51 million dollars with a $16 million dollar signing bonus, they're basically saying that the total deal is worth $51, and that includes a signing bonus of $16 million. Not that the deal is in total worth $67 million.

Therefore, it's not Pace turning down $66 million, but rather he's probably turning down a figure that's under $50 million total since the article says the Rams' deal "doesn't match the Walter Jones contract in guaranteed money and money paid out in the first three years of the contract."
