    Re: 11 penalties....

As was said numerous times in the telecast, Jeff Fisher will be actively coaching until the start of the season. I agree with all the outrage here. I am fervently hoping that as the season progresses our younger players will learn the nuances of avoiding penalties and the veterans will be sharper as well. As much as I feel Jeff is a player's coach, he won't tolerate sloppiness. There is enough talent on our squad and the practice squad to replace a slacker.

    Go Rams!

Yes, the RAMS played a pretty ugly game, and they were guilty of most of the penalties, but do you honestly believe that the Ravens only commited 7 acceptable penalties to the RAMs' 19? Really??? It looks like it's gonna be another long year of playing against the officials and the other team.

Speaking of penlaties only called against the RAMS....

Hitting a defenseless play on a punt return????? Really????? In 40+ years of watching football, I have never heard that penalty called on a punt. That penalty is usually reserved for hitting a receiver that just caught the ball, and hasn't had a chance to prepare himself for a hit, or a hit to the helmet. A reveiw of the play shows the flag was thrown at a play in which the defender layed a hit on the shoulder pad of a potential tackler to open a return lane. WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?!?! That is a perfectly legit block; that happens about 4 or 5 times on every punt.

Pettis' PI penalty wiped out an Austin catch to the 8 yard line, which would have been 1st and goal. Instead, the Rams get a 4-12 at the 28. Zuelein hits the FG for 3, but they might have left 4 points on the field.

Barksdale's holding call erased a 22 yard catch by Quick. Instead of 1-10 from the 20, the Rams were dealt 3-27 from the 48. Bailey makes a catch to trim the yardage, but GZ's field goal attempt hits the upright from 53. That's at least 3 points left on the field.

Goebel's roughing the passer turns a 4-8 from the 16 into a 1-goal from the 8. They hit the end zone next play. Assuming they kick on 4-8, that's an extra 4 points given to them.

That's about 18 points lost due to penalties. It really does make a difference.
Would have been nice to have the 28 yard run by Pead count too.

False start penalties and holding/block in the back penalties on specical teams should be the easiest to eliminate right off the bat. So many times on special teams the holding/illegal blocks don't even affect the outcome of the return. Holding (on offense) as a last resort to preventing your QB from getting killed is perhaps more forgivable, but a block in the back when it has no effect on a return is inexcusable.

As we debate the issue of penalties the most agonizing ones are the pre-snap penalties. I think those are the ones that bother Jeff Fisher the most and are the easiest to correct. The ones made during plays are also agonizing but usually a matter of experience and that is one thing that we will have to put up with for a while.

    Go Rams!

    Gap.

Totally agree! That sounds like the most / one of the most absurd penalties ever!
