    Anyone want to criticize haslett?

Our defense is better than last year, but as the season wears on, especially as we play better teams, its quite obvious that our defense isnt very good. We are still in the playoff hunt, in large part because of massive quantities of turnovers and gifts from lousy teams, but if we are honest, we can admit that our pass rush stinks and we havent stopped the run all year.

Last year, week after week, the blasting of marmie was non stop. The point here isnt really to defend marmie, but merely to point out, for the millionth time, that talent and personnel is the key. Marmie didnt have spoon (a huge upgrade from claiborne), chaveous, a big upgrade from arch or fakhir brown, an upgrade from any other cover corner we had last year. Chillar is a year better, glover for pickett is about a push.

THus, my question, why doesnt anyone seem to criticize haslett. I think its an admission that our talent level just isnt there, even though the talent is better than last year. Everyone knows haslett can coach, so they blame the players, which is fair, but the same argument was there last year as well.

We will see what happens with this defense as we work our way through the tough part of the sked. Lets hope that haslett can find a way to step up our level of play, and specifically, a way to get to the qb. Blitzing up the middle with multiple guys and seeing rivers still sit in the pocket without even getting hit was making me ill all game long.

the fact remains is that we just dont have enough talent on the defensive front. hargrove was suppose to be that other big play pass rush sack specialist to compliment but we all know how that ended. And you cannot count on a rookie on the dline. Glover has been somewhat of a disappointment and kennedy is either great or nowhere to be found. We need a better dline to compete plain and simple. Its not so much the linebackers or the secondary( fisher does have to go though) its the dline

GC, we have been pretty easy on Haslett, maybe because of how the defense played in the first game,we all thought the problem was fixed,as we have seen the last few weeks it is not, so bring on the Marmie treatment.

Honestly, I don't care what the problem is. I don't care about the arguments, I just want our defense to get our act together. Honestly, the way they played against Denver, if they can do it against Denver, I don't know why they can't do it again.

GC, one of my favorite movies is "Christine".

What does that have to do with the Rams?

    Plently.

Arnie Cunningham fell in love with a beat-up, old, run-down Plymouth Fury. With love and an definite obsessive-compulsive disorder, he made the car into a real killer set of wheels.

But, the old dude who owned the garage where Arnie worked on his car said it best...

    "You can't polish a turd."

Haslett isn't Arnie Cunningham. However, he has found a way to turn a turd into fertilizer. And, fertilizer is something that promotes growth.

How can you critisize a man who inherits a turd and makes something grow?

Re: Anyone want to criticize haslett?

Well, i will say this. Last years defense can only be described as an "above the water line dump" You know, a dump so massive that when it comes out of your butt you dont hear the plop in the water the pile is so big, thus, an "above the water line dump."

This years defense to date still resembles a multi-log clear out explosion. There is still hope however and room for another log or two before we are completely above the water line.

Lets hope that we begin the process of flushing this week against kc and carry it through to the game vs the hawks.

Why I thought passing on Ngata was a worry

This is why I thought passing on Ngata and Wimbley in the 1st and a big space eater DT like Gabe Watson was a mistake later. The Rams don't have the DL to stop the run period. With the small LB's they need big 'keep off my LB's' type lineman similar to Baltimore.

Angry Re: Anyone want to criticize haslett?

I don't want to criticize Haslett but I will say this some of the players we have up front(Dline) are getting old and some are young pups. LL has really not played so hot since the first game and LG seems to be wearing down as the season goes on. We will improve when the young pups start to mature but we need to do something in free agency and the draft next year to continue to rebuild our defense.:\

Re: Anyone want to criticize haslett?

i think many fans let marmie pass his first season but when the slide continued in his second and last season that's when the turd hit the fan...we may have to wait till next season to see if haslett gets a similar treatment...

Question Re: Anyone want to criticize haslett?

I honestly think that haslett is doing all he can. I think that its the players who have just lost there confidence. People like the media are always saying the defense is no good. It may be going to their heads now. My opinion anyways.

From what I've seen, Kennedy has been doing an okay--no, I'd say a good--job at the NT position. He is getting double-teamed, but still nobody's making the play. You can't blame the lineman when the linebackers and safeties attempt a tackle but fail to bring down the ball carrier. If you want, we could take Glover out for Fisk and have a pair of "keep off" linemen, but somehow I don't think we can afford to with the state of our pass rush.

The reason I'm being patient with Haslett is because of the situation he inherited. There was only so much that could be done in free agency this year, and the guys we have brought in since he arrived have been some of the best performers on the defense so far. That gives us hope that as he gets the players he needs for his scheme, things will get better. With Haslett we can see why the scheme isn't working. With Marmie it was hard to tell what he was even trying to do. Also, Haslett has these things I like to call "coaching credentials." You know like having coached a successful defense at some point during his career.
