Atogwe to sign 1 yr contract..

    Atogwe will sign franchise tender

Posted by Mike Florio on July 15, 2009 12:35 PM
Today is the deadline for signing franchise players to long-term deals. According to Albert Breer of Sporting News, it's also the day on which one of the franchise players will sign his one-year contract.

Rams safety Oshiomogho Atogwe, per Breer, will accept his one-year contract today, triggering a one-year guaranteed salary of $6.342 million.

Though it might be a coincidence, there's a chance that signing the tender is a precursor to a multi-year deal, possibly with a new team to which Atogwe would be traded.

If that's the case, the next domino needs to fall within the next few hours. As of 4:00 p.m. EDT, Atogwe and the Rams will be stuck with a one-year relationship.

It's unclear whether a trade after July 15 would permit Atogwe to sign a long-term deal with his new team. We've recently learned that the July 15 deadline does not apply to players traded before the last day for signing franchise players to long-term deals. But when the Bears were talking to the ***** a few years ago regarding a possible in-season trade of franchised linebacker Lance Briggs, the Niners determined that Briggs could not be signed to a multi-year contract.

I see no basis whatsoever for Mike "Make Stuff Up" Florio's speculation that a trade is in the works.

Actually, this is not a bad deal for the Rams. They get Atogwe at a price that is much lower than the franchise payments associated with players at other positions. Atogwe has demonstrated that he is willing to accept this and will continue working towards the goal of a long term deal.

Just as I said yesterday... if a long term deal was not going to be in the works, he'd be signing the franchise tender almost immediately. Little did I know he'd actually sign it BEFORE the deadline. Just goes to show that he really does want to be a Ram, he just needs to see a little more green to go along with the blue and gold.

Oh, and yes, I have no clue either as to why he might be traded, other than that Florio might be paid by the word or by the lies he comes up with.

How does it make it a better deal that safeties are priced cheaper than most other positions? Would a long term contract not also reflect the exact same realities or is OJ demanding to be paid like the best QB in the league?

Doesn't signing the deal preclude a long term deal for at least a year lest the Rams lose the Franchise Player tag for the duration of the new deal OJ would sign?

That's quite possible, however, the two sides can no matter what still keep talking and can come to an agreement that will be signed after the season is over.

I don't like the whole trade talk when it comes to Atogwe. If there is a trade it better be heavily in are favor. Atogwe is a up and coming borderline pro bowler. I would just like to see the Rams lock him up for another four to five years and be done with it.

You missed my point. The point is, if you are going to be stuck paying a player at the franchise rate, better for it to be a safety at $6M than an offensive tackle, running back or cornerback who would command a $9M # against the cap.

St. Louis Rams safety Atogwe signs franchise tender
    By Bill Coats
    St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Unable to reach accord on a long-term contract by today’s deadline, Rams safety Oshiomogho Atogwe has signed his one-year tender as the team’s franchise player. Atogwe’s salary this season will be $6.34 million — the average of the top five players at his position, as mandated by NFL rules.

Atogwe’s agent, Ken Landphere, still can negotiate with the Rams, but Atogwe now is prohibited by league rules from signing a long-term deal until after the season.

The 5-foot-11, 210-pound Atogwe, 28, was a third-round draft pick out of Stanford in 2005. He’s been the starting free safety for three years, a period in which he intercepted 16 passes, the fourth-highest total among all NFL defensive backs.

At least we've got him for a year .. Ha Ha Florio !!!

a long term deal will be negotiated and agreed in the season, however its a bit of a gamble because a pro bowl season from Atogwe will see his value increase, however a lackluster season means his price drops or the Rams move on without him

At least we know that he'll be working his butt off all year long trying to get that big payday!

The point isn't really relevant though. Your point means we would somehow be better off franchising a kicker or punter rather than any other position because then we wouldn't be stuck paying another more than $2.4 million.

OJ is going to be paid this year as a top 5 safety in the league. Is he not worthy of that ranking? If he signed a contract he would have been paid that way so how are we better off that he is at safety than cornerback or QB?

Last thing this team needs I guess is top 5 talent at QB?

That's just it do we really know that? He just hit the 1 year huge payday. Does he continue to be the Atogwe that we and the RAMS are used to or does he slide at all basking in the cash? There aren't any signs that he will change but you never know.

I like this 1 year signing by our RAMS. It's like a security blanket for the future as far as Atogwe is concerned. Does he step it up or fall back? Either way we are only locked in for 1 year with him.

    GO RAMS!!!
