    Av's "Looking West" (Week 9)

    Current Standings
    San Francisco 6-1 (1-0)
    Seattle 2-5 (1-1)
    St. Louis 1-6 (0-0)
    Arizona 1-6 (0-1)

I was 2-2 last week, correctly predicting the Niners' win and the Cardinals' loss. I was thrilled to have been wrong about the Rams game, of course. The Niners are riding high and threatening a very early end to this race. Still, the schedule does allow some hope for a run by another team... maybe even the Rams.
    Av's Prediction Meter: 14-12 (.538).

    Week 9 Predictions

    Cowboys 31 Seahawks 13
Dallas can't afford to drop a game like this. They are in a dogfight to stay in the tight NFC East race. Seattle should not give them too much trouble.

    Redskins 19 Niners 16
Washington is coming off a horrible performance, and must right the ship quickly. As long as they can keep Frank Gore reasonably in check, they should be able to come away with a close win here.

    Rams 24 Cardinals 16
While it remains uncertain, I'm betting that Sam Bradford will start, while Kevin Kolb will not. The Rams should be able to put a lot of pressure on whichever QB plays for Arizona, and the offense, behind Steven Jackson, is starting to come around.

    Projected Standings
    San Francisco 6-2 (1-0)
    St. Louis 2-6 (1-0)
    Seattle 2-6 (1-1)
    Arizona 1-7 (0-2)

The Rams will finish the first half of the season on a 2 game run and will draw within four games of the Niners. They will need to keep winning - particularly in their head-to-head matchups against San Francisco - if they want to make this interesting.

The Niners need to win only 2 more games to win the West, maybe one. After this week, it'll be one or it could already be over. Rams, and the rest of the West have virtually no chance to catch them now. The hole is too deep.

That's not correct, from a mathematical standpoint. If the Rams were to win out and go 10-6, the Niners would have to either win five more games or win four plus the tiebreaker.

That would be great if the game were played...."mathematically".

    But it's not.

But thanks for the math lesson Av. Where did the rest of my post go?

    Really?

If Team A's Total Points Scored in Game > Team B's Total Points Scored in Game then Team A wins.

    Sounds like math to me.

The rest of your post was merely a quote of my entire post, which was unnecessary.

The whiners have a 5 game lead, with 9 games to play. Chances of doing anything are slim and none, but there is some wriggle room, especially if we manage to beat them twice.

Right now I'm not really pulling for the title of the NFC West, I doubt the Niners can slip up that badly. I think our only chance is the wild card, which will be extremely hard this year.
