Re: Balzer on Cowher/Marty
Howard may not THINK so, but he does not KNOW. All he can do is look at trends (same as we can).
Would the Rams depart from this trend? Who knows?
In my mind, the perfect next Head Coach would be some young, up and coming guy who becomes a "Great Head Coach" with the Rams. The problem is, its a lot harder to find that guy than it is to just hire someone who's proven - well, except for the money part.
I'm still going to hold out hope for Cowher, Shottenheimer, Fox, or some other proven guy. But, failing that, Linehan still needs to go.
Re: Balzer on Cowher/Marty
At this point, John Robinson is better than Linehan.
Re: Balzer on Cowher/Marty
If you want to look at the coordinator ranks, a name I'll keep throwing out there is Rex Ryan. He'd probably need the support of a good OC, but I like the job he's done in Baltimore, first as LB coach, then as DC.

Well, no one KNOWS. But I think Howard, who has covered this team for a while and has good insight on what goes on at Rams Park, probably has a better idea than most.
Ultimately we will have to wait and see if he is correct or not.

I thought you wanted a proven head coach...?
Re: Balzer on Cowher/Marty
You really should read my entire posts before reponding.
What I said was that, IN A PERFECT WORLD, the Rams would hire an no-name up-and-comer on the cheap who would become the next [insert name of your favorite all time HC who started his career with great success].
However, as my post continued, I noted that the reason you pay the big $ is to get a guy who you don't have to guess about because he has already demonstrated the ability to build and lead a successful team.
But, to avoid any further needless twisting of my words, here is my official order of preference:
1. Hire a proven NFL HC.
2. Hire a promising NFL Coordinator.
3. Hire a successful college coach who runs a pro-style system.
4. Give Jim Haslett a try (conditional on his mid-season promotion and some demonstrated improvement under his leadership in second half of season)
5. Retain Scott Linehan
6. Hire Larry Marmie as HC
7. Exhume George Allen and allow him to coach through the use of Weekend at Bernie's puppetry
8. Hire an actor who has played a HC in a movie (Gene Hackman?)

I really would prefer Denzel Washington.
Re: Balzer on Cowher/Marty
Al Pacino would get my vote
Re: Balzer on Cowher/Marty
At this point Goldie Hawn couldn't do any worse.
Re: Balzer on Cowher/Marty
Realistically, if this F.O. wants to show that they want this organization to not go down the crapper then I'd honestly have to say that we do need to spend money. We need big name players with certain positions and we can't be scared to spend the money anymore. We have to do the same with a head coach too, it is not worth it to have another less than mediocre year while other teams keep improving year after year. Big name players don't solve a whole team's problems and I sure as hell don't want to become the next Redskins but sometimes we do need to take a shot at bigger name players. It'll show not only the players but the other teams around the league that we are not a joke and we need to be taken seriously (Not that that matters but it definitely sounded cool :P)

I'd take an exhumed actor who played a high school coach over Marmie.
Re: Balzer on Cowher/Marty
Denzel Washington for HC. I vote for that. At least his press conferences would be fun to watch.

Yeah, but he'd start his kid, and that wouldn't work for anybody. My vote's for Christopher Walken. I don't think he's ever played a coach, but he'll creep the hell out of the other team! And we can have free cowbell day at the dome!

Money may be the manifestation of this limiting agent, but if truth were to bubble up from Rams Park, I don't think Shawgmunt has any desire whatsoever to give up the kind of personnel control that a qualified HC would demand.
Like I said yesterday, newbies and re-treads are just happy to have a job. The Bills and Martys of the coaching world will want control........something Shawgmunt has been quite hesitant to give up, to say the least.

I would add #4.5, hire Karl Baker (remember him?). At least he'd make sure we got an offensive line!
