    Bartell: Overpay or Goodbye?

As the start of the Free Agency period is growing closer by the minute, the Rams are going to have to make a tough decision. Do you overpay for Ron Bartell (someone is going to) in the hope that he will justify the money with his play over the next 3-5 years, or do you say goodbye, risk that he becomes a Pro Bowl player elsewhere, and leave the team short on proven CBs?

There won't be a bargain here. The NFL knows that Bartell is a commodity, and there isn't going to be a major home-town discount (you can thank Zygmunt for not locking him up months ago). If you want him, you have to pay close to top dollar.

    What do YOU do?

Good corners are hard to find. I never thought i'd said this but for this one instance i wish the rams acted like the raiders and just threw money at him.

Pay him. With Bartell it's like paying it forward. He's just now coming into his own. It's about time we overpaid on my side of the ball.

    I voted to pay him.

CB is a premium position that is going to require substantial $ no matter how its filled (particularly when you are talking about a #1 CB). Bartell has proven his value on the field, he has outstanding measurables (6'1, 4.37 speed), has never been a problem on or off the field, and is young enough (27) that he should be able to play at a high level for at least 3-4 seasons.

Pay the guy. If we cut him, we have another hole to fill.

Does releasing Bennett and Green give us any extra money to pay him? I don't know if those two are related, but I still don't know much about this whole cap thing. I say definitely overpay him we need that guy.

Pay him, letting him go just makes more holes.

    Re: Bartell: Overpay or Goodbye?

Pay him. If you release him, you're paying either a) the same amount or more for another free agent with just as many question marks, or b) paying a lot of money for an unproven rookie. Of course there's c) not replacing him at all, which is a terrible idea.

    We need to keep him.

    Re: Bartell: Overpay or Goodbye?

as i said in another post..replacing him could end up costing more than actually "overpaying" for him... and be something that could take years before we lucky enough to find another talent like him.

Hill,Shephard,Wade,Groce,Garrett,Fisher etc....its easy to draft a quality CB isnt it?

and thats not even mentioning other F.A pick ups!

    Re: Bartell: Overpay or Goodbye?

I say pay him. We will either overpay for a vet that's on his last legs (ala Chavous) or overpay for a replacement that is not nearly as talented. Remember if we plan to win the division we still have to handle Fitzgerald!

Spags has a plan............. We just don't know what that plan is. Does Bartell even fit into his plans ? Who currently on the team fits into his plans ???

    Re: Bartell: Overpay or Goodbye?

Im sure Spags is looking to see who will become available in free agency before he commits to Bartell.

Can we get someone as good cheaper? Can we do without him? Is he actually that good?

I think he might not be re-signed.... Bartell wants a big pay day and he doesnt care which team that comes from.

I agree. We've let too many good defensive players walk to save a buck and we've seen the result the last several years. It's time to stop the bleeding.

AV, at this time I'd like to see some financial numbers to se what Mr. Bartell is asking for that would give us all a better idea on what we think would be the best move. This is a bad situation, and one that could have been avoided if management had taken care of this last season, but at this time I say we pay him as long as he's not asking for ridiculous money.
