Bears' Rivera getting interest from Rams

    By John Mullin
    Tribune staff reporter
    January 3, 2006

Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera is on a short list of four candidates to succeed Mike Martz as coach of the St. Louis Rams, and Rams officials are expected to travel to Chicago to interview Rivera later this week.

The Rams, looking to hire a coach with a defensive and NFL background, asked for and were given permission Monday to contact Rivera. Their other top prospects are New York Giants defensive coordinator Tim Lewis, Washington Redskins assistant head coach/defense Gregg Williams and a fourth individual also believed to be an NFL coach.

Martz, forced to relinquish his duties during the season for health reasons, long has been a supporter of Rivera, whose name is being linked to several of the vacancies created by Monday's firings. Martz and Rivera were slated to be the offensive and defensive coordinators, respectively, of the Bears under Dave McGinnis before January 1999 contract talks between the Bears and McGinnis blew up and the team hired Dick Jauron.

"I was in the exact same situation as he's in right now," coach Lovie Smith said of Rivera. "Mike Martz did a great job of helping me. One of his goals was to help me get a head-coaching job. He was able to do that.

"I'm going to do everything I possibly can to help Ron. He's done a great job for us here. He deserves his opportunity to run his own team. This is an ideal week to do it. I told Ron whatever he needs to do, whenever he needs to do it this week, to do that and just let me know what I can do to help. I think his resume speaks for itself."

Rivera was under consideration by the Houston Texans, but owner Bob McNair is leaning toward a head coach from the offensive side.

Concerns on Rivera: How many years has he been successful as a DEF COORD?

Where does Lovie's success stop and Rivera's begin?

Tim Lewis NYG: I know more about this guy. He was fired in Jan 2004 by the Steelers. With him the Steelers defense was ranked approx 13th... They fired him and the VERY NEXT year the same Steeler's DEF with a different scheme was RANKED #1 in the NFL.

Many Steeler's DEF players made public comments supporting the firing of Lewis.

Don't ask me why he's even being considered as a HC at this point.

Maybe Lovie will help push him this way.

When I looked up the info on Rivera .. It made me feel better.

He's been a DC for 2 years in Chicago and they had a GOOD Defense last year too (everyone knows about this year).

BUT, Rivera was LB coach on those good Philly DEFENSES. He learned from Jim Johnson in Philadelphia. Jim Johnson is some kind of good. He's like Monte Kiffin in Tampa, he's paid like a Head Coach and they're not moving into Head Coaching roles.

Rivera is looking better and I'm on the cynical side.

I'm all for him if he does not want to totally change the offense. So far, Rivera and Saunders seem to be taking the lead in my estimation. Not so sure about Jerry Gray...I just don't want to wait until all of the talent is gone to other teams. Time to strike while the iron is hot...Cliche, yes...But true...

is it just me, or does rivera look like dave wannestet without the moustache...?

seriously, does rivera have any HC experience? or will this be a "on the job training"...

maybe a young inexperienced DC like rivera is the right man for the rams HC position...he'll have to be naive and docile enough, initially, to put up with our FO's agendas...

"front office agendas" = making money, minimal capital input calculated for maximal capital output...

making money =/ = spending to field best team possible

    you get the drift...

That guy's Bio sounds like music to my ears. The end of the "soft" tag associated with the Rams for the past 3-4 years.

Pardon me if I'm not up to speed but, is Fairchild still going to be the O-Cord?

Maybe he (Rivera) could get that usless free agent MLB we picked up to show up at the games.

What about the head coachs that were fired recently?

Mike Sherman ? Mike Tice ? Jim Haslett ?

Norv Turner ? Steve Mariucci ?

Do any of these guys make sense ?

None of them interest me...Only Sherman is worth an interview, but not the job.
