Before you panic about Bates, consider Henderson

While Jim Bates remains my first choice for defensive coordinator, I have to say that I'm warming up to the idea of Donnie Henderson as a fallback position.

At first glance (and, as pointed out by some on other boards) Henderson's numbers from last year with the Jets seem pedestrian, at best. The Jets ranked 12th in total yards against, and 29th in yards rushing allowed.

However, if you look a little deeper into the numbers, you can see that Jets actually had an outstanding year defensively.

First, consider this stat: the Jets ranked dead last in the league in time of possession at an average of 26:37 per game, and second to last in total yards on offense. Therefore, the Jets defense was on the field more than any other, and likely played with poor field position much of the time.

Nonetheless, they allowed only 4.7 yards per play, which was tied for 6th in the league overall. This included 3.9 yards per carry, which was tied for 12th best in the league.

Henderson would be a great selection, in my opinion.

Agreed. I've always said I want Henderson over Gray or anything. His D has been consistent and all that and if he could make our D as physical as the Jets we would be a good D next year. Also maybe he could find us a Jonothan Vilma?

We are not going to become a team that controls the clock on offense, I'm not sure how much of a factor this will be.

If not Bates what about Jim Haslett as our DC?

I like the idea of him finding us a jonathon vilma. How he is going to do that, i have no idea, but it sure would be great. Vilma is a tackling fool, exactly the kind of guy we need.

It wasn't that hard to find Jonathan Vilma folks -- he was a clear first rounder. Its not like he created man from dust here.

Actually, even this year, when the Rams' offense was sub-par, it was in the middle of the league in time of possession at 30:14 per game (just below Indy and NE and ahead of Seattle).

Ya when come draft time we have Greenway, Ryans Hodge, Roach that we can choose from. All great tacklers and could be the next Vilma. I mean in away we have our own in Pisa... Some days and others Pisa plays like RT.

I dont think pisa is in that category. I like pisa, but i think that one of the reasons he looks so good on our defense is that the rest of the guys are so bad. I think he misses plenty, especially when he makes hits and doesnt wrap up. I dont know anything about how vilma is in pass coverage, that is an area where pisa needs major work.

Henderson could be a solid choice. Before the Jets, he spent several good years with the Ravens and their D. Also, there is a connection between Linehan and Henderson. They were both assistants at the University of Idaho '88-'90.
