Berlin cut, Null stays as Rams No. 3 QB

    By Jim Thomas
    St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Quarterback Brock Berlin has been cut by the St. Louis Rams. So barring an unexpected addition to the Rams QB corps, rookie Keith Null has won the battle for the No. 3 quarterback position with the Rams.

The Rams were in the process of reducing their roster to the 53-man limit Saturday. According to league sources, the Rams also have released offensive guard Roy Schuening, center Tim Mattran, offensive tackle Renardo Foster, and fullback Jerome Johnson.

Schuening was a fifth-round draft pick by the Rams out of Oregon State in 2008. He did not appear in any games last season as a rookie.

WOW!!! Alot of people here had Berlin as the #3 QB. I for one had Null before Berlin, all along!

Looks like the Rams see some potential in Null. I liked Berlin and thought he did a good job in his role, but I'm glad the Rams decided to keep Null and I'm excited to see what he might become. Hopefully he develops into something more than just a 3rd QB, which was all Berlin was going to be.

Wow is right! I didn't see that coming. Berlin would have been the safe pick. But, we do need that developmental quarterback. They must have seen some potential to build upon with Null. I'm ok with the move.

I'm not surprised by this at all. Null played very well the first two games engineering a game winning drive in the first and almost the same in the second (if it weren't for a drop by Klop). Or perhaps Spags and Co. didn't believe they could sneak Null through waivers and onto the practice squad. Either way i think it was the right decision.

they both showed that they were capable of the 3rd QB spot..but Null has a far higher ceiling methinks and thats what probably gave him the roster spot..Null could potentially become a solid starter someday where as i think Berlin is destined to be a Jaime Martin type..

Wow...the remake of Logan's Run is in full production. Two more moves towards the future with Curry & Berlin getting the chop.

Except for risking a cherry pick of Null, I wouldn't have faulted Spags for keeping Berlin. Maybe it was partly a PS numbers game & he was reluctant to have a spot taken by another QB because of our teamwide paper thin depth.

Berlin is not an nfl qb. Its too soon to tell what null is or isnt. Case closed. Neither will be the qb of the future and if either has to play this year we are dead.

I have been rooting for Null all along. Berlin never really appeared to have anything special. He wasn't even a "journeyman" quarterback. Not trying to dump on Brock, as he gave it everthing he had, but it just wasn't to be. One thing really impressive about Null (IMO) was his presence in the huddle and under center. He always seemed in control, and on the occasions when things went poorly, he appeared unfazed. He exudes competitiveness - again just my opinion. Thanks to Direct TV and NFL Network, I was able to have a much more detailed look than in previous years' Ram preseason games. I agree with GC that it's too soon to know what Keith is or isn't at this point, but there is something about him that inclines me to think he has "it." The players seemed to respond to him well .. We'll see I guess. I'm glad he made the team ..

When they're both of the same skill level now, you always go with the rokkie because he's not hit his ceiling yet. I'm afraid Berlin has. Besides, they brought in Null, they inherited Berlin. Null wins that battle very time.

Come on GC, you say Null won't be the QB of the future from watching a few preseason games? I know he's got a huge hill to climb as a #3 guy and the odds are against him, but that's exactly where Bulger was at one time before going to multiple Pro Bowl's. I understand that you're a realist, but I wouldn't write him off just yet.

Can't agree with you here GC. He wasn't Matt Ryan coming out, but one college career and one training camp, and I don't think anyone yet knows if he can be a QB of the future. I am almost positive nobody thought Kurt Warner was anything much after his first training camp.

I like what this kids has done and shown so far.
