Bernie Bits: Rams' offense has turned Holt into less of a threat

    By Bernie Miklasz

    Free Torry Holt.

Over the past four games, the Rams wide receiver is averaging only 10.8 yards per catch, a noticeable drop from his pre-2006 career average of 15.3. Holt went into the season as the only player in NFL history to accumulate at least 1,300 yards receiving in a season for six consecutive years.

That streak is on the line in the restricted downfield passing attack operated by Rams coach Scott Linehan. Holt is still capable of being a dangerous threat, but Linehan seems to prefer shorter, ball-control passes that turn Holt into a harmless, dime-a-dozen possession receiver. At his current pace of 76.5 yards per game, Holt would finish with 1,224 yards.

Is Linehan the only NFL coach who can stop Holt?

Good Article and i think hes right, Give Torry some deep balls!!

seems like the only one who gets them is Curtis who is usually covered well this season.

Bernie is an idiot. If Linehans offense would throw down the field like Martz he would complain about us turning the ball over because there would be more INTs. Linehans offense is a ball control offense it is a different philosophy. Holts yards per catch would go down in any offensive system outside of Martz. Martz took more shots down the field then any other OC. So yes Holts yards per catch are down but so is our INTs. Bernie needs to find better material to write about. Yes I would like to see Holts number pickup some but it is a different offense and the OL needs to buy the QB and WR time for the long deep passes. With our OL missing 3 to 4 starters from last year and still trying to jell after the loss of Pace. All those long passes also come at the expense of the QB taking big hits. Bulger has remained healthy and the INTs are down with a make shift OL. That is saying something about the offense. We are more suited right now for the short pass with the OL we have now. I think the short pass is our best weapon. IMO our OL with the new guys have not proven they can open holes for the running game or sustain the blocking need for the deep routes.

By the way he is on pace for 1224 yards while Barron who was a rookie last year is the only starter out of the 5 OL we had last year playing regularly right now. That is 76 yards off the 1300 that Bernie puts out there. That is also in a ball control offense that is throwing far fewer INTs.

Bernie pull out your calculator that is less then 5 yards per game off the 1300 plateau.

Bruce is averaging 14.6 yards per catch which is tied for the most he has avearged since 2001. He is also on pace for over 1000 yards. Which he has only accomplished once in the last three years.

    One more thing for Bernie.

Holts average per catch last year was 13.0 and this year it is 13.0. Holt had 15 catches of 20+ yards last year this year he is on pace for 14.4. Last year Holts long was 44 this year 67. Last year he had 9 TDs this year he is on pace for 11.2 TDs. Man Bernie is so smart to realize in a ball control offense that Holt should improve on his stats.

    Bernie is a joke.

He doesnt like Linehan so he picks out a semi truth about a fan favorite to try and turn the fans against him. Apparently Bernie thinks we are stupid.

Holt is still capable of being a dangerous threat, but Linehan seems to prefer shorter, ball-control passes that turn Holt into a harmless, dime-a-dozen possession receiver.

Gee I wonder if Bulger being sacked 22 times in the last 5 games has played into the decreased yards per catch. Maybe we have to get rid of it quicker and therfor run fewer deep routes. Maybe just maybe it could be that our make shift OL is not giving them time to throw the deep ball. Also why is he not comapring his 13.0 yards per catch for the season to last years average which was 13.0. Why is he excluding the 14.2 average for the first 6 games when the OL was in a little better shape. Holt has had 4 games this year where he has averaged 15 yards or better per catch and last year he only had 4 games where he averaged 15 yards or more.
