Bernie Bytes: 5 Thoughts On Rams-Giants

Bernie Bytes: 5 thoughts on Rams-Giants

Let's begin with five quick opinions on the Rams @ NY Giants game...

    1. The Rams won't have an easy time running the football. The Giants are tough against the run. Last week the Rams rushed for 163 yards, averaging 6.3 yards per carry, against an undersized Philadelphia front seven. The Giants are bigger, wider. In their loss at Washington last week, the Giants held the Redskins to 74 yards rushing on 26 carries, 2.8 yards per run. The Giants gave up very little inside.

    2. The Rams need to account for Giants safety Kenny Phillips. Last week, Phillips moved up aggressively to disrupt the Redskins' attempt to run the football, and he also had two QB pressures on the blitz. Overall Phillips led the Giants with six tackles and had their highest grade on the defensive side.

    3. The Rams probably should attack the left side of the Giants' O-line. The Redskins had good success in going after LT William Beatty and LG David Diehl. Pro Football Focus gave them minus grades in pass protection; Diehl allowed three sacks.

    4. At home, the Giants are not as imposing as you'd think. Since their Super Bowl season of 2007, the Giants are 19-13 at home. They went 5-3 last season in their first year at MetLife Stadium.

    5. It's imperative for Rams OTs Jason Smith and Rodger Saffold to play well. Against the Redskins, Giants DEsJason Pierre-Paul and Dave Tollefson combined for three sacks and three QB hits. After film analysis of the 67 offensive tackles that saw action in Week One, Pro Football Focus ranked the Rams' tackles near the bottom of the ratings. Saffold was ranked 57th and RT Smith was 64th. Put it this way: if the Rams' OTs don't step it up Monday night, then say a little prayer for Sam Bradford.

Saffold, ranked 57th out of 67 picked 33rd overall
Smith, ranked 64th out of 67 picked as number 2 overall

I am going out on a limb here by stating they need to pick it up.

    6. Tight ends need a big game against two rookie linebackers (jones, then williams on passing downs).
