Bernie Bytes: Ominous feeling about Redskins vs. Rams ..

BY BERNIE MIKLASZ | Posted: Friday, September 24, 2010 11:27 am

    * Hmmm ... seems that some of the leaders at Rams Park are getting a little defensive over some of the constructive criticism that's coming their way.

I'm not sure why any leader associated with a team that's 1-17 in the last 18 games should be defensive about anything ... as they say in baseball when something is going bad: "Wear it."

    * I have an ominous feeling about Sunday's Redskins @ Rams game. Washington is better than the first two teams (Arizona, Oakland) on the Rams' schedule. Donovan McNabb will be the best QB the Rams have faced so far.

The Redskins will undoubtedly be angry after giving up 526 yards and blowing a big lead in last week's overtime loss to Houston. Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett is well aware of the Rams' liabilities on offense; he will not permit Steven Jackson to beat him. Yes, the Redskins' defense got torched by Houston, but the Rams simply don't have the stable of playmakers that the Texans put on the field. (I do think, however, that rookie QB Sam Bradford will hold up better than Washington assumes he will when the Redskins blitz.)

I have no idea who will cover Redskins tight end Chris Cooley, who has nine catches for 144 yards in two games. Rams linebackers and safeties have been terrible in covering receivers this season.

According to STATS LLC, the Cardinals and Raiders targeted Rams LBs and safeties 36 times in the first two games, completing 25. Yikes.

And if this game is close, if it somehow turns into a game of football "Stratego," the big edge goes to Washington's Mike Shanahan and his assistants.

Right up to the point where their Marshal steps on the bomb we unorthodoxly set in the middle of the field.
