Bernie Bytes: Rams bullied by West ..

BERNIE MIKLASZ | Posted: Thursday, September 9, 2010 10:45 am

    * Any prognosis of what the Rams must to do to rejoin the ranks of the alive and well begins with a simple premise: win some division games. The Rams haven't made the playoffs since the 2004 season. That's also the last time they were anything close to being a factor in the NFC West. Consider:

-- Since the start of the 2005 season, the Rams have been bullied by NFC West rivals. They're 0-10 vs. Seattle, 2-8 vs. the ***** and 2-8 vs. Arizona for a five-season record of 4-26.

-- Over the last four seasons the Rams are 0-8 against the Seahawks, 2-6 vs. the ***** and 1-7 vs. the Cardinals for an NFC West mark of 3-21.

-- It's even worse over the last three seasons: 0-6 vs. Seattle, 1-5 against the ***** and 0-6 vs. the Cardinals for an NFC West record of 1-17.

The Rams have not won a division game since beating the 'Niners on Nov. 18, 2007.

They have not defeated the Cardinals since Sept. 24, 2006.

And their last regular-season win over the Seahawks came on Nov. 14, 2004.

The Rams are 1-14 in home games inside the division since the start of the 2005 season; the only win came against the ***** on Nov. 26, 2006
    .

I get tired of hearing about "statement" games, but with the Arizona Cardinals coming into the Edward Jones Dome for Sunday's season-opener, this would be a good time for the Rams to make a stand. And let everyone know that they're going to at least offer some resistance against the NFC West this season.

Yes! It would be a great time !!!

    * New Orleans over Minnesota tonight as the NFL kicks off the 2010 season. Defending Super Bowl champs haven't done well in terms of repeating -- the last time it happened was the 2005 New England team -- but they usually come out strong, having won the last six season-openers in the Thursday-night showcase. Two other factors: the Saints are at home. The Saints also figure to pound Brett Favre again. The gradual beating took a toll on Favre in last season's NFC Championship Game; in the second half Favre threw two INTs and had a passer rating of 54.8. In the first half of that game, Favre had a TD with no INTs and a rating of 83.3.One of this years, Favre will be physically diminished. Is it this year?

Good job demonstrating your ability to read a calendar, Bernie.Probably best to stick to skills you have rather than hurt our heads with some insight as to how this Rams squad might change the pattern.

Oh please, you could come up with all kinds of statistics like these. We've won 6 games in three years. It would be impossible for us to have a good record against division rivals or against any other coherent group of teams. Saying that we can't beat teams in our division doesn't mean much when we can't beat much of anybody else, either. We had a 0.000 win percentage against teams in division last year and a 0.125 win percentage against teams outside the division.

We need to get better at staying in games period before we bother worrying about whether the team we're playing is in our division or not.

The last few years the Cards have had a hall of famer at quarter back with an easily top five receiving corps with Fitzy and Boldin. Boldin and Warner are gone and Derek Anderson is now throwing the ball? Ha!

The Rams haven't had Sam Bradford before, the line is arguably the best it's been since 2006, and Jax is healthy.

I'm sure that the Cards will get their yards and put up some points, but Sam looks like the real deal and he'll make the Cards pay this weekend. It's time to open some eyes!
    I believe!

Exactly Teke!! Things really are different this year. (On paper anyway - maybe more if preseason games are an indicator). The Cards are minus some key players, and we've added some key players on both sides of the ball, not the least of which are Bradford and Saffold. I am far more optimistic at this time than I was at the same time last year. Hopefully we'll start the season with a win. What a novel concept !!!

I say we do away with all of this conjecture and just kick the Cards' A$$es on Sunday!

    How about that?

Before we start slapping ourselves on the back about facing Derek Anderson, the last time he played the Rams, he went 18/25 for 248 yards and 3 touchdowns in a Browns win. So its not like Anderson sucks whenever he's in.

Bernie reminds us of a very important point. We have to win within our division if we're going to do anything. I remember Spags saying before last season started that the RAMS needed to focus on their division foes first and foremost. What better time to start than this Sunday?!!!!!
