    Bernie on Various Things

Post subject: Rams make MORE moves, other notes, (9-9)

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Rams re-signed S Justin Lucas and added FB Stephen Trejo.

S Zack Bronson was placed on IR.

    They released TE Mike Brake.

Lucas spent the offseason and preseason with the Rams before being released on Sunday.

Trejo, 6-2, 250, spent the last 3 years with the Detroit Lions, appearing in 46 games. He's an Arizona State guy and played LB next to Adam Archuleta there and was switched to FB by the Lions.

Bronson hurt his left ankle during Wednesday's practice and will miss the entire season. He had a history of injuries before signing with the Rams.

Brake is an undrafted rookie free agent from Akron who spent the entire preseason with the Rams.

    Cheers,
    Bernie

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Some follow-ups:

If Bronson had a split contract, he'll be paid around $300-320 thousand this season. If it isn't a split contract, he'll be paid about $660 thousand.

Two TEs, Manu and Cleeland. Trejo is a FB, H-back type but I don't know what he's capable of doing this week. Martz said Armey has been eyeing Trejo for quite some time and had him noted as someone they should grab if they ever get the chance.

    Bronson will have ankle surgery.

Also, on Pace. Martz said Pace is in the best shape of his career. "He's quick, physical. He strikes. There's nothing slow or sluggish about him. It's obvious he's spent a lot of time on his conditioning. He was very serious about it. And it's much appreciated."

    Holt practiced today. Looks good.

    Cheers,
    Bernie

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Rams as we speak are about $3 million under the cap.
They have money to do a deal with Pace....and can probably save cap space by doing so.

    Archuleta or Pace?

    They can sign both.

But if it would come down to a decision between the two of them, it's no contest.

Talk to me when Archuleta makes it to his first Pro Bowl.

    Cheers,
    Bernie

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What did Pace get by not coming to camp?

First of all, let's correct something. HE DID NOT HOLD OUT. He was under no obligation to report.

OK, so what benefit did he realize by not coming to camp.

    Let's see....

Maybe you'd like to ask Travis Fisher that question, or David Boston, or Anquan Boldin, or N.D. Kalu, or Jimmy Kennedy, or Jon Jansen, or JP Losman, or D'Angelo Hall, or Michael Vick (2003), or Chad Pennington (2003)....I could go on, and on, and on.

Why expose yourself to unecessary risk of injury and a general beating down of the body when you don't have to?

    Cheers,
    Bernie

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I feel comfortable in predicting that the Dolphins will get more out of L. Gordon over the next couple of years than the Rams will out of that No. 3 draft pick.

Rams had leverage in dealing with Miami and didn't take advantage of it. Period.

The Rams invested a No. 3 pick in Gordon, and that's all they got back, even though he's now an established NFL running back with promising upside. My gosh, at least get Miami to throw in another pick, even a late pick.

    Cheers,
    Bernie

    Archuleta or Pace?
It better not come down to this decision. If we find ourselves in a position where one of them has to go, then the FO has dropped the ball. Both of these guys need to spend their prime years wearing horns.
Also, on Pace. Martz said Pace is in the best shape of his career. "He's quick, physical. He strikes. There's nothing slow or sluggish about him. It's obvious he's spent a lot of time on his conditioning. He was very serious about it. And it's much appreciated."
Great. So why do we go through training camp again? How about the coach being allowed to exempt certain players from camp? Sounds like whatever routine Pace has been doing is better than camp anyway.

Semantics will get you nowhere Bernie. Call it what you will. He chose to not show up.
Why expose yourself to unecessary risk of injury and a general beating down of the body when you don't have to?
Then coaches should be allowed to give special exemptions for certain players. Some players aren't going to get anything from camp, and if Pace is in as good a shape as Martz has seen, then he knows something Martz doesn't anyway. Just send the bubble players & rookies to camp and let the others work out on their own.

Doesn't sound like a good idea to me, but what do I know.
I feel comfortable in predicting that the Dolphins will get more out of L. Gordon over the next couple of years than the Rams will out of that No. 3 draft pick.
Maybe you shouldn't be so comfortable. I'd take that no. 3 over Gordon. He would have played less this year with the Rams than any previous year. He was only averaging 4.25 attempts per game as our #2 back. Think how that would have gone down even more as our #3.

As for that 3rd round pick...compare Gordon to Hargrove or Curtis, our last 3 third round picks. Bernie, can you honestly tell me of those 3, you would take Gordon? Seriously.
Rams had leverage in dealing with Miami and didn't take advantage of it. Period.
The Dolphins would have gone elsewhere. Period.
The Rams invested a No. 3 pick in Gordon, and that's all they got back, even though he's now an established NFL running back with promising upside.
Hey, we're lucky we got our 3 returned. And while Gordon does have upside and will do better as Miami's 1 than our 3, until his season high is more than 298 yards, let's not call him "an established NFL running back".
"Before the gates of excellence the high gods have placed sweat; long is the road thereto and rough and steep at first; but when the heights are reached, then there is ease, though grievously hard in the winning." --- Hesiod

    Re: Bernie on Various Things

Bernie seems to be unaware that:

    1. The Dolphins don't have a 2005 2nd round pick to offer;
    2. They had expressed interest in other RBs (i.e. James Jackson at Cleveland) that would have gone for less; and
    3. Gordon probably would have sat on the bench all year for the Rams anyway.
