    Beware of the "experts"

Often times, many of us here have noted just how limited the "experts" are. Here is a perfect example. Gil Brandt, who I have generally regarded as one of the more knowledgeable pundits out there, recently responded as follows to an inquiry about Chris Long:

    Al, Newport, wy

What are your thoughts about Chris Long? Will he be improved this year or is he a bust? He should be better with Robbins on d-line...

    Gil Brandt, NFL.com

Al, I think so much was expected of Long as a Top 5 pick and the son of Hall of Famer Howie Long. The problem with Chris is that he doesn't really have the size needed for the position. He has a great motor, but lacks the size to play 55 plays a game at DT.

Being from Wyoming, did you see one of the best game's Long played in college? It was a game Virginia played at Laramie against the University of Wyoming.
Apparently, Brandt does not realize that Long is a DE (and fairly prototypical in size for that position), not a DT.

The point here is not to merely bash Brandt. Rather, this Q&A shows that the national reporters often have a very cursory familiarity with the teams they comment upon on a regular basis. As a result, their commentary is often very superficial.

    Caveat emptor.

How do you seriously mistake Chris Long for being a DT...a former number 2 pick.

I know more about other team's players than these guys it would seem at times..

I could at least get a guy's position right.

Has he ever heard of google..

Gil Brandt's idea of research probably still involves the Dewey Decimal system.

Hmm, a mistake on his part.

However, you have to realize that although y'all are criticizing him now, when Brandt made the comment about Bradford's pro day being close to Troy Aikman's pro day, everyone was all over him about how good and smart he was.

I'm taking it in stride as a simple mistake. Brandt is usually knowledgeable and correct.

He definitely lacks the size to play 55 plays a game at DT. You guys need to give Brandt his due respect.(kidding)

That's an entirely different scenario. In that instance, he had observed Bradford's workout, and commented upon what he saw.

Here, he made an assessment based entirely on misinformation.

Its not a question of his qualification to make an assessment, its a question of his basis. In the case of Bradford, he had a basis to comment. In the case of Long, he did not.

I agree with you that sometimes experts are "limited", and that they usually only have a general "feel" for each team. They're hasty and cursory as you described.

However, what I am saying is that there's no need to bag on Brandt. The guy is old, he's been around a lot of information for a long time, he probably just made a simple mistake.

Now, for his basis, I think he does have at least SOME kind of basis, even if it is kind of shaky. In 2008, Brandt claimed that Long "would be a better DE than his father (Howie)." Brandt was also one of the bigger analyzers of the conflict between Long, Dorsey, and Gholston.

So, this means that Brandt does indeed know that Chris Long is a DE. Now, this was 2 years ago, and he might have forgotten it. And, with the original question containing Fred Robbins in there, Brandt probably thought Long was a DT, since he might have interpreted the question to being "would Chris Long, a former #2 overall DT, benefit from a veteran DT in Fred Robbins?"

Not really much to argue, I'm just saying Brandt is probably suffering from overload of information, and old age.

Now, Brandt's analysis of Long is somewhat correct. He does have a great motor.
