"Big Easy" look for Big Easy Sam....

    From Yardbarker...

St. Louis Rams' chief operation officer Kevin Demoff gave some insight on how the team wants their offense to be like – the New Orleans Saints. He spoke about ‘finding the open man’ and ‘spreading out the defense’ as examples of how the Saints have continued success in the passing game. The additions of rookie WR Tavon Austin and veteran TE Jared Cook are examples of the style of players who can play multiple positions to get open. The team is looking for quarterback Sam Bradford to take the next step in his development in the new offense offensive coordinator Brian Schottemheimer installed this offseason. “The goal this year is for Sam to be able to throw to the “open” player, and I expect that we will get meaningful contributions from all 5 WR’s, the 2 TE’s and the running backs,” Demoff said, via Tevin Broner of Turf Show Times. “I think you could see this offense resemble an offense like the Saints where you have 4 or 5 players catch 40-50 balls but nobody who catches

Let's hope Demoff's projections are right about the offense. I'd take 6 receivers with aroung 45-50 catches all for 600-700 yards. That translates to a spread out offense.

I'm all for this offense mirroring the Saints. My question is not so much do we have the WRs to do it.....because I think we absolutely do. My question is do we have a "Graham" and "Sproles" to do it? Those two are a huge part of that passing game, and I'm not yet convinced we have their counterparts here. Hopefully, I'm wrong. Maybe somewhere between Kendricks, Cook, Pead, Austin, etc., there's a "Graham" and "Sproles". But it will take more than a flock of young receivers to imitate the Saints.

I think Jared Cook is actually a very good representation of Jimmy Graham. Two guys that are tall, very fast, have good hands, but aren't very effective blockers (weakest part of their game). I think Cook is being severely underrated. I envision him having a massive year, probably close to being our leading receiver. Not to mention both of these guys line up out wide or in the slot most of the time.

Sproles will be hard to mirror. But I think that's where we develop our own image. We may not have a Darren Sproles, but they don't have a guy similar to Tavon Austin (Jitterbug in the slot). Quick appears to be similar to Colston in only a physical stand-point. I would also take Chris Givens over any of their remaining WR's (Lance Moore, Devery Henderson, Nick Toon, Kenny Stills) though Henderson is quite the deep threat like Givens.

I sure hope we can re-create an offense similar to the Saints because that team is explosive and can score 30 every game. Pair that with our up and coming D and you have a playoff team in probably every division, even ours.

By the way,I called Sam "Big Easy" because that was OU coach Bob Stoops' nickname for him....a reflection of his calm, cool demeanor. Personally I hope to see more fire out of the boy this year, but keeping your cool in a crisis is a good thing.

Their one difference being Graham has been productive; Cook has not.

Hopefully, that difference is erased this year.

A PRODUCTIVE Saints' style offense with the defense we already have in place would easily put us over .500 this year. Let's see what Sam can do with his new weapons.

In this context, I think its interesting to look at how Sam's numbers compared to Drew Brees' in their first three years as starters (note that Drew did not start until his second year):

    Name-----Attempts--Completions--Yards--TDs--Ints--QB Rating
    Bradford---1,498-----873--------9,378---45----34---77.3
    Brees------1,282-----787--------8,551---55----38---83.0

    Fairly comparable, I'd say.

Which means nothing unless Sam can improve and continue to progress big amounts. I'd be ecstatic with a QB any where near as good as Drew Brees.

You're right that it means nothing as to the future.

That said, its interesting to think that Brees was once a guy who was sent packing in favor of a younger QB (Philip Rivers). Initially, that may have seemed like a good move for San Diego but, in the long run, you could argue that they should have stayed with Brees.

Not to mention the difference between Drew Brees and Jake Locker. But at the end of the day Hub is right.
