Blackout avoided: Rams' opener a sellout

    By Bill Coats

It went down to the wire, but the final tickets for the Rams’ game against Carolina on Sunday at the Edward Jones Dome were sold by noon Thursday, meaning that the season opener will be televised locally (KTVI, Channel 2).

Under NFL rules, games must be sellouts 72 hours before kickoff or they are blacked out in the home market.

Only one regular-season game has failed to sell out -– last Christmas Eve vs. Washington -– since the Rams moved here in 1995.

    Edward Jones, Rams ensure

home opener against Carolina will be televised

Non-profit organizations, families of servicemen will attend game

ST. LOUIS – The financial services firm Edward Jones announced today that they purchased 2,000 tickets to help ensure the Rams home opener against the Carolina Panthers will be televised locally.

While some tickets currently remain for sale, Rams ownership has agreed to purchase any tickets still available at kickoff on Sunday. The commitment guarantees that the game will be aired on KTVI Fox 2.

Edward Jones donated the 2,000 tickets to non-profits including Voices for Children, an organization that helps foster children in the City of St. Louis move quickly from foster care to permanent homes; Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri, the local unit of a nationwide youth mentoring service; and other United Way-supported agencies. In addition, through Scott Air Force Base, tickets will be distributed to the families of airmen currently serving in Iraq.

“There are a lot of St. Louisans who normally might not be able to attend a Rams game," said Jim Weddle, Edward Jones managing partner. "We're thrilled to be able to give them that chance and also allow many others the opportunity to watch on television."

“Through the collaborative effort of Edward Jones and our ownership, Sunday’s game will be sold out at game time,” said Michael Naughton, St. Louis Rams vice president of ticketing and finance. “However, at this point, limited tickets still remain for those who want to see the home opener in person.”

This is the second time Edward Jones has purchased remaining tickets lifting a potential television black-out. Last year, the firm purchased tickets and gave them to Ameren UE linemen involved in restoring power to thousands of homes impacted by severe thunderstorms.
