Bradford not the only one battling to start
QUESTION: With the full squad set to begin working out at Rams Park tomorrow, what position battle(s) do you see as most compelling during this year’s training camp?
JIM THOMAS
As of Thursday, it became clear that the left tackle position was up for grabs between last year’s No. 2 overall pick, Jason Smith, and this year’s second-round pick, Rodger Saffold. The coaching staff likes Saffold’s athleticism as a pass blocker, and Smith isn’t even practicing fully as he comes back from a June fractured toe. At right guard, versatile vet Adam Goldberg enters camp as the favorite, but Hank Fraley and John Greco are in the mix as well. And of course, the No. 1 question entering camp is when does Sam Bradford take the reins from A.J. Feeley at quarterback?
BILL COATS
The most obvious area is wide receiver: Who will emerge as the go-to guy? What five or six of the 10 contenders will make the final roster? But the competition at right guard is wide open, between John Greco, Roger Allen, Hank Fraley and Adam Goldberg. That should be entertaining, too.
BRYAN BURWELL
Suddenly the most interesting battle is on the offensive line, where we all watch to see how healthy Jason Smith will be and whether he or rookie Rodger Saffold will be at RT or LT.
JEFF GORDON
It’ll be interesting to see the wide receivers sort out. So many guys are coming back from one injury or another. Several of these guys flashed ability last season, but does anybody have staying power? Can Mardy Gilyard become an impact rookie? Will Sam Bradford have enough to play with?
KATHLEEN NELSON
The sort-out at wide receiver should be fun. With so many youngsters and guys returning from injury, the depth chart should be in a state of flux from one practice to the next. And what happens if they bring in a veteran/mentor? Just FYI: Brooks Foster made the nicest grab at Friday morning’s practice: one-handed, tip-toeing along the sideline, managed to stay inbounds.
