BREAKING NEWS: Rams Eliminated From Playoffs

My staff has been working on the numbers since Monday, and have finally been able to cofirm that the Rams have, in fact, been eliminated from playoff consideration.

While the math is somewhat complicated, I'll try to break it down.

Right now, if the season ended, the NFC division winners would be the Eagles, Vikings, Saints and Cardinals. Behind them, the two Wild Card front runners are Dallas and Green Bay. Both of those teams have a record of 9-5. Therefore, even if both lost their last two games, they'd still be 9-7.

The Rams are 1-13. So (and I'll confess this art had me stumped at first), if they win out the record will be 3-13. Based upon a comparison of winning percentage, 9-7 would beat out 3-13. Oddly, strength of schedule does not factor into that evaluation under current NFL rules.

So that's it. The Rams are, in fact, going to have to wait until 2010 to try to get back to the playoffs.

Sorry to have to break a bad news story like this.
