BREAKING NEWS: Rams release OT Orlando Pace

Orlando Pace released by St. Louis Rams | Around the Horns | STLtoday
Orlando Pace released by St. Louis Rams
    By Bill Coats
    St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Orlando Pace has been released by the Rams.

Pace, 33, was taken by the Rams as the No. 1 overall pick in the 1997 draft and has been with the team since then. He was a staple at left tackle, earning seven trips to the Pro Bowl. Pace was hampered by injuries in recent seasons. A knee injury caused him to miss two games and part of a third this past season.

The Rams save $6 million under the salary cap by letting Pace go.

All for now . . . more later today, hopefully

A Hall-of-Famer and Rams legend. Hope he can land a spot on a contender. So long, Big O.

One thing about the new regime with Pace, if the Rams don't throw the ball as much then it will be easier to go with a rookie at OT.

Amen to that. I can not believe they let him go. I am totally shocked I thought for sure they were going to keep him at least for some veteran leadership for the next L.T that we will be picking with the second overall selection. I just thought ahhhh its just rumours. Well Spags, Devaney and the rest of the F.O are really serious about the youth movement I hope that this one was a good decision. So long Orlando.... Thank you and god bless. I hope he lands somewhere else and competes for one more superbowl. Kind of sad to think that Chris Long is not going to be competing him in practice anymore I believe that it helped fuel him. Chris long will still be a pro-bowler without him here. Just sad....

Good point Tx. It's looking like OT is probably going to be the target with the second pick.

    No huge surprise here.

A big thank you to Pace for being a big part of one of the most exciting times in Rams history. Good luck to him as he finishes his HOF career with someone else (hopefully, not one of the "hated" teams).

Pretty much. Was hoping we could find a way to keep him and go Curry, oh well. Thanks for the memories Orlando!

OT was a need regardless. Now it's just a more important need.

    So long and thanks Orlando.

Can't say I'm surprised. One of the greatest offensive tackles of all time, he was great for us hear and I wish him the best of luck.

I personally want him going to the Steelers, they desperately need a tackle and that is a very classic organization where he could get another ring.

One of the best tackles to play in recent memory and I'm very glad he spent as long here as he has. It was nothing short of a necessary financial decision, as hard as it will be to see him leave.

As others have already noted, definitely no surprise. He is the definite unfortunate casualty of the current youth movement. His cap number alone represents approximately the entire number needed for the incoming draft class. While it always hurts to see such a historically productive member of the team (especially grown within the organization) leave, it almost always eventually happens. I wish him well in the remaining years of his career, and it will be even easier to wish him GREAT success so long as he does not continue his career within the NFC West. And with that being said, we may soon be welcoming Mr. Monroe or Mr. Smith (hopefully for a tenured and successful stay).
