Re: BREAKING NEWS: Rams release OT Orlando Pace

Actually, the truth is, when Barron filled in for Pace in 2007, he did a fairly decent job. I'm not saying he's the long term solution, but I think he can give us a good year in 2009, thereby allowing us the luxury of taking a guy like Curry.

What do the LT prospects look like for next year?

Farewell big guy. This is truly a sad, sad, day. Wish we could turn back the clock. You should have 2 SB trophies instead of only one.

There are always good prospects in the draft.

Also, don't forget that the offense the Rams are going to run has a much lower "degree of difficulty" in pass protection. Don't be shocked if a guy like Barron suddenly starts looking like a much better player.

It's a sad day. I'd have rather seen Holt released and Pace kept for at least one more year. I hope he finds success with another team. He is the model professional athlete, hope we get OP version 2 in the draft!!

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Rams release OT Orlando Pace

We knew it was a possibility that Pace was leaving, so it's not exactly a surprise. Still, it's a shame he couldn't finish what will likely be a Hall of Fame career in horns. He's been one heck of a lineman, and will be tough to replace.

looking into Bell to play RT at this point..

has a lot of good things to say about OP..
I've heard this idea before. It's interesting, because statistically, Barron's best season in terms of sacks allowed was in 2007 when he replaced Pace on the left side. He was viewed as more of a natural left tackle when he came out.

The issue with Barron though has always been work ethic and working towards making his potential a reality. He hasn't done it in four seasons (three as RT, one as LT), so I just don't see how we can rely on him to do it now. If he does it in 2009, how can we know it's not just another example of a guy finding motivation because he knows a new contract is on the way?

I'm not known for being a big Barron fan though, so maybe that plays into my skepticism of him suddenly turning things around. If the Rams are looking to replace Pace, I'd rather it be with a second overall pick than Barron.

The Rams could always draft a tackle, play Barron on the left side, and if he blows it up there, we could tag and trade him. I'm just skeptical of it happening. Maybe he proves me wrong.

Maybe so, but he's even more undersized if he stays at guard. This just might be the best place for him at this point in time. Remember he first came into the league as a Tackle and then was subsequently moved to guard when the Titans had some injury issues.

I'd like to see how he does at right Tackle before making any firm judgements.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Rams release OT Orlando Pace

Here is Chip Rosenbloom's statement on Pace's release:

"I can't begin to thank Orlando for all he has meant to the Rams organization, since we selected him with the first overall pick in the 1997 draft. It is never easy to end a relationship that has had as much success as ours, but in the best interest of Orlando and the Rams, we feel now is the right time.

"As a Super Bowl champion and seven-time Pro Bowler, he has been a true professional and will always go down as one of the finest Rams of all time. We wish him, Carla and their children the very best as they move onto the next chapter of their football journey."

I think that everyone here has made some good points on the upcoming alignment. However, you can't teach experience, and although OP had some injuries the last couple of seasons, I feel that he still has many more miles left in him. Change is inevitable, but changing of the guard sometimes comes at a price.

Hopefully, the best is yet to come.

Worst thing at this point, to add insult to injury, is to see Pace in a whiner uniform, PUKE!

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Rams release OT Orlando Pace

To add in the fact that we figured that the Rams would be releasing Pace for cap reasons this year, also remember that we've been expecting this since 2005, really. Back when we drafted Barron in the first place, wasn't he the heir to the LT spot anyway? And as Av already said, when Barron's filled in on the Left side, he's actually done rather well, at least when the play was going on. I make no guarantees about his false starts, but as always hopefully he'll get over that. I, for one am not all that scared about letting him play LT, but then of course we have a hole on the right side, which may or may not be taken by Bell or Greco.

The other possibility, of course is to draft someone. If Barron is taking LT, we still do not need to take Monroe or Smith, and I am fairly certain we could get away with one of the tackles that get out of the first round.
