Probably because Donnie Jones is 12 years younger than Turk?

FTG, he still had better NET average than Turk, and he's a lot younger. (If I'm not mistaken about the net avg.) That is why man, I love Turk, but we have an even better advantage with this guy.

please guys, you dont have to see anything in preseason to know for sure. Linehan knows this guy, he coached him. The stats speak for themselves. He is at least as good as turk and a lot younger.

The real key here is not whether its turk or jones, its that we are showing that we are prepared to spend money for a real punter and not try to do it on the cheap.

I would rather have coughed up the money for Turk.

Here is a vid of Jones punting in college for LSU in the Sugar Bowl. It is poor quality, but provides a glimpse of the type of excitement that this wonderful Punter can bring to fans. The LSU faithful rushed the field in honor of this great punt.

Seriously, sounds like a strong punter and should keep us solid at that position. I will miss watching Turk breaking off long runs (like the one against the Raiders last year) however.

Personally, I'd just as soon not spend money on a punter. I mean we should never have need of one!:bash:

But realistically, in a game where field position is critical the better the punter the better the position.

Assuming, of course, the punt coverage team can actually cover and tackle. THAT seemed to be a bit of an issue for our Rams lately...:\

Donnie Jones rocks and he was a favorite for Saban in Baton Rouge and Miami. Not too many punters are coveted by coaches in the nfl but this kid was.

I saw him punt for LSU for a few years and he was awesome.

I guarantee fans will forget about Turk and Baker's stability whatever

FO needs to draft mostly SEC players like Jones. They play a real schedule

I really like this move. Don't get me wrong, Turk did a fine job last year, loved his attitude and effort, but Jones is A LOT younger and just as (if not more) talented. And we hopefully wont have to worry about this position for a lot of years to come.

    I dig it.

Good move, for a guy a lot younger than Turk

Nick, Any idea of the cap ramifications?

I always say that if you can get younger at a position and not lose any productivity then go for it. And if the Dolphins don't match and he performs we could finally have a bit of stability at a position that has been a revolving door for many a year.

Im happy with this. Giving up a 7th rounder is fine because of the two comp picks, and Jones is a good, young punter.
