    Butler may need season-ending surgery

    Butler might need surgery
    By Jim Thomas
    Of the Post-Dispatch
    Thursday, Aug. 11 2005

What originally was diagnosed as a bruised knee could be a season-ending injury
    for Rams cornerback Jerametrius Butler.

Further examination has revealed that Butler has a torn posterior cruciate
ligament in his right knee. According to coach Mike Martz, Butler is facing two
    options:

    * Try to strengthen the knee and play through the injury.

    * Undergo season-ending surgery.

"He's leaning toward playing right now," Martz said Thursday. "The doctors have
told him he can - he's just going to have to really rehab it. Or he can have
surgery and repair it. So he's got a choice. He and I have talked a great deal
    about it."

With encouragement from Martz, Butler is seeking other medical opinions before
    making a final decision.

"The first thing you do on something like that, you go and get several opinions
    - just like anybody would," Martz said. "If you're diagnosed with anything,
that's what you do. And this is serious."

Losing Butler for any length of time, much less the entire season, would be a
blow for the St. Louis defense. A two-year starter in the secondary, Butler has
developed into an above-average cover corner, with good instincts and good ball
    skills.

Last season, he led the turnover-impaired Rams defense with five interceptions.
(The Rams had only six interceptions total.) In 2003, he tied for the team lead
    with four interceptions.

Butler feels no discomfort running forward. But backpedaling has been a
    problem.

"At that position, a little bit of looseness in the knee is going to bother you
more than it would a receiver, just because of the backpedaling," Martz said.
"There's a lot of players playing in the league right now with this (injury). A
lot of them. We've got a lot of them on this team playing with it. But they're
not DBs, and that's the issue. Obviously, he's very concerned."

If Butler decides against surgery, Martz isn't ready to rule him out of the
regular-season opener Sept. 11 in San Francisco.

"Not necessarily," Martz said. "It just kind of depends on what these other
doctors says, too. Our doctors felt that he could rehab it and play on it. He's
going to have to understand, it's going to feel real loose. ... That's why he's
got to spend a lot of time really strengthening that leg and tightening it up."

Butler suffered the injury on the first day of camp, July 28, and hasn't
practiced since July 29. Butler's injury, coupled with Tuesday's release of
Dwight Anderson, leaves DeJuan Groce and rookie Ron Bartell as the leading
candidates for the starting cornerback job opposite Travis Fisher.

But there are a host of other candidates, including Kevin Garrett, Terry Fair,
    Corey Ivy and Michael Hawthorne.

    That hurts! Ouch..

Good thing we drafted and signed so many DBs.. There still will be a drop-off, unless somebody really steps up.

This bites. We lose Fisher last season and now Butler is questionable. I hope we cut Anderson for the right reasons.

Wonder if Aeneas is still hanging around?

I have a good feeling about Ron Bartell, but he is only a rookie. Can he step up and play as a rookie? That is a lot to ask.

I read that he has been working out aggressively in the offseason and considering playing for another year. Even then, I doubt he'd be able to play cornerback. This leaves a huge gap, and somebody had better realize this is a huge, career-making opportunity to prove themselves. Nobody beyond Travis Fisher and Butler at corner is even a sure thing to make the team. DeJuan Groce has always been my flava' flav.

:tut: Our main DB last year -- the interceptions!

I doubt JB he will play through it as suggested that he 'could' -- may end up with a more permanent damage.

I agree, dramatic opportunity for everybody else. :clanram: Carter, Bartell, etc.

Hmmm...Ty Law sure looks good right about now. I'm looking at our roster and I only see one legit starting cornerback.

Maybe we should put in a call to Aaron Beasley. This team will need something else if this team is going to be without JB for awhile. Beasley could be good in our zone scheme even at 32 years of age.

Another option could be Ray Mickens. He's fast but undersized (sounds like the perfect fit right). He was slated to be the starter for the Jets but was a cap casualty after Ty Law was signed.

Then there's Bobby Taylor. I have my doubts that he'd be able to contribute as a starter. He didn't look very impressive with Seattle last year.

A perfect example of why i hate pre season. This bites, but nothing we can do about it. Injuries are part of the game.

Let's keep Dwight Anderson out of any conversation about starting. He was even behind me on the depth chart.

Butler had his moments, but anyone who attended the Bash game against the Saints could tell you that whoever the Saints WR was lined up across from Butler on that day was open before the snap was finished. He did finish with an ok season, but it isn't like he was a shutdown corner or anything.

Utter.im with you on Bartell I think in very short time will be a good corner!.........It looks like the safety might have to help out quite a bit until the other corner catches on!

On a positive note, I think with an improved and healthy Kennedy, and more aggressive schemes with blitzing, coupled with better linebackers, should allow a rookie cornerback to come in and do decent. I agree that Butler's loss is bad, and I am upset about it, I would say he is a little better than average anyway.

Ya. But Butler was our leadign interceptor last year. We should get Ahmad Carrol or Chris Gamble, or Deganelo Hall
