Can Rams win again without a healthy Steven Jackson?

THE WATERCOOLER: Can the Rams win again without a healthy Steven Jackson?

    BRYAN BURWELL:

The simple answer is yes, but the answer is not that simple. When Jackson went down in the first half, it forced the Rams' offensive play calling to become more creative, and that was a blessing in disguise. The team showed that it is capable of producing quite effectively against the Redskins because the offensive line played with an aggressive attitude that was missing for the first two games, while we continue to overlook how well this defense has played all season. The Rams have allowed only 47 points in three games (average of 18 points a game). If that continues, you are supposed to win football games.

    JIM THOMAS:

Probably not over the long haul, but sure, it's possible over a game or two. But what they'd need is a similar combination of factors that helped against Washington. Namely, a defense that forces some turnovers. An effective passing game by QB Sam Bradford, plus the kind of run-blocking they got from the offensive line in the second half Sunday.

    BILL COATS:

For a team with already scant margin for error, removing Jackson from the equation makes that margin razor-thin. Still, Kenneth Darby was pretty impressive in the second half Sunday, plus there's always the possibility of bringing in another back to at least provide depth. If the Rams can throw the ball effectively and keep defenses honest, they might be able to get by.

    JEFF GORDON:

Yes . . . if they are playing another mediocre team. Kenneth Darby is a decent receiving back. He has quick feet and is dangerous is space. He got some yardage Sunday thanks to excellent blocking up front. Keith Toston is a north-south guy. Give him the holes Darby got and he'll pick up enough yardage to set up the play-action passing. And if Jackson has to miss time with this injury, perhaps the Rams will finally upgrade their depth by adding one of the proven backs looking for work.

    KATHLEEN NELSON:

Sure, they can win again without him. But they need a running game, if not from Steven Jackson, from someone else. Backups Kenneth Darby and Keith Toston did a nice job in the second half, when the Rams rebuilt their lead. It would have been easy to put it all on Sam Bradford, but the Rams wisely resisted the temptation. My colleague, Bill Coats, noted that the Rams used 38 pass plays versus 37 runs. The balance will keep defenses honest. If it means the Rams need to grab another back to maintain the balance, they should do it. They also could help themselves by throwing downfield every once in a while. The pass chart in today's paper indicated that Bradford didn't throw a single pass longer than 20 yards. Variety is the spice of life.

I'm not so sure we can win without the threat of Jackson on the field. If the opposition knows that Jackson isn't playing their defense is going to look alot different. Not as many 8 man fronts which equates to tougher passing situations for Bradford. Hey, anything is possible but having Jackson on the field keeps the defense focused on him which makes them weaker in other areas. I don't see the oppostion game planning against our running game like they do now. The focus would go to Bradford which could cause some major problems. Just my opinion.

I was pretty frustrated when he got injured, but there's no doubt in my mind they can win without Jackson.

I rather enjoyed the balanced play calling in the second half.

Bradford has ZERO completions of 40+_yards & 5.6 yards per pass avg. is 4th worse in NFL...only Clausen, J.Campbell, T. Edwards were worse.

    Lets go....OPEN IT UP

The problem with winning without Jackson is this....what if Darby goes down too? We have to go with Toston? An undrafted rookie free agent? We are way too thin at RB to think about that.

If the O-line can open up holes, Toston can run through them. Giving Bradford the authority to audible at the LOS (as was done vs the Skins), should help offset Jackson's absence .. For a rookie, Sam showed a lot of moxie against Washington ..
