Salary cap expands to $127 million for 2009


The salary cap will grow in 2009.
Because teams didn’t spend as much as they were supposed to under the collective bargaining agreement the past three years, teams were notified Wednesday that the salary cap will increase over $4 million to $127 million for this coming year, according to sources with two NFL teams. The collective bargaining agreement calls for cap adjustment down if teams spend over the cap in cash and adjustment up if they don’t spend up to the cap.
It defies the recession and logic, but just before free agency, teams actually will have more flexibility and salary-cap room. This is tremendous news for teams such as the Colts and Panthers, who are pressed against the cap, and not such good news for teams such as the Buccaneers and Chiefs, who were way under the cap. Now their advantage is somewhat compromised.
Teams believed they would see a mild increase in the salary cap, but this is bigger than teams expected.

Boy did we need this more than ever, it is like mana from heaven. This gives us over 24 hours to work something out with Bartell now that we have more room. Demmoff, Devaney lets get something done boys.

So this is what we currently have to spend in free agency, barring no releases tomorrow. we do not need the initial 6 mil until the draft, so for free agency in itself we have this current number. 14-6.2 +1.5 + 1.3 + 4 + .05. Which is 14.65 million to spend in free agency, then that way we could get our money back for the draft by either releasing pace or holt down the road. We could still reasonably release holt and keep pace and still get enough money for the draft by just trading or releasing holt. and to my knowledge i would think 14.65 mil can make somewhat of some signing, could possibly get Ron Bartell re-signed, could get Jason Brown and get one of the SS. To be honest though, I think there are more cuts to be had tomorrow for the Rams.
