Cardinals vs. Rams: Tyrann Mathieu talks about handling Tavon Austin

The rookie safety says that the big play receiver can be contained.

When the Arizona Cardinals and the St. Louis Rams face off on Sunday to kick off their 2013 season, there are a couple of rookies that will have the eyes of many. On the Arizona side on defense, there is Tyrann Mathieu, who will see significant time on the field as the team's nickel corner. He will actually have the assignment many times to guard rookie receiver Tavon Austin, who is the big play threat that the Rams have been seeking, as Austin will many times line up as the slot receiver.

Mathieu was asked about the matchup by reporters.

"He's not a real vertical guy," Mathieu said of Austin. "He kind of works within 10 yards. He's very shifty, very quick. People say he's fast. I think he's more quick than fast. I think if you stay square on him and really get in his face at the line of scrimmage, I think you can challenge him and make things rough on him."

That will be Mathieu's job. He will need to jam him at the line of scrimmage. He will be the one to keep those short passes from turning into a big play.

This will be an interesting match up. Also do you think they will use Mathieu to cover Cook? 6-5 vs 5-9 how do you think that will go? I posted this video awhile back, here is Austin vs Mathieu when TA was a junior. Mathieu is number 7, don't ever see him actually tackle the so called quick but not fast TA. I also see the quick but not fast TA run by the defense more then once.

I expect Austin to be a decoy this game while Cook and Givens breakout.

Does he think Austin is going to line up at Split End where he can get a good jam on him? Surely he understands that Austin will be moving up and down, but off, the line. Good luck with that whole "stay square on him" approach.

tackled him twice on kick offs, forced him out of bounds once, and had one regular tackle during downs. It's funny cause Austin tackled him as well. Also missed two tackles on Austin, tried to tackle him and slid of cause of Austins "quickness".

I love the idea of Tavon being a decoy early with Sam even faking to pass it to him a few times then pulling off TA and going to Cook or Quick or Pettis etc. Then later in the game going to Tavon as I think the Honey Badger might get complacent and frustrated later with chasing Tavon on fake patterns. That is how I would do him any how.

Re: Cardinals vs. Rams: Tyrann Mathieu talks about handling Tavon Austin

If Austin isn't fast (4.34 forty), what is Mathieu (4.50 forty)?

It doesn't matter what kind of vertical threat you are or aren't as long as you run faster than the guy covering you...

Re: Cardinals vs. Rams: Tyrann Mathieu talks about handling Tavon Austin

If I was Mathieu I would be more concerned about Cook and Givens first. I think Jared Cook is going to jump out fast to start the season. Once they start keying on Cook and who ever else is hot then we will see Austin rock and roll.
