Re: The challenge by martz on the jackson fumble

And he only has a small window of time to throw the flag. Mainly about 20 seconds. He did the right thing here. It didn't hurt us.

Re: The challenge by martz on the jackson fumble

I heard the MNF guys talking about this last night. Sometimes a coach will throw the red just to get the extended timeout. If you're thinking about taking a TO anyway, why not throw the flag and get about twice as much time to rest up your players?

In this case though, it was a change of possession. So the defense was already on the field resting when Jackson fumbled. So I'm not sure that the elongated timeout would have been the motive here, but I think that's a pretty good point nonetheless.

I'm sorry Nick, I wasn't clear. My fault. I didn't mean motive for this challenge, but maybe for some of the other Martz challenges that have fans scratching their noggins.

You need to correct me here if I'm wrong, but didn't sMartz have time until the Cards actually snapped the ball to throw the flag? And even if that were 20 seconds away, look at your second hand and see how many questions you could ask in that time.

sMartz: (to Jackson) "Jackson, did you fumble?"

    Jackson: "Yes."

sMartz: (to the player who said the Rams recovered) "Who recovered the fumble?"

    Unidentified player: "McCollum."

sMartz: (to McCollum) "McCollum, did you recover Jackson's fumble?"

McCollum: "No. I recovered the Cardinal's fumble."

    sMartz: "The Cardinal's fumble?"

McCollum: "Yes. I knocked the ball loose on my tackle and recovered it while falling down."

With the proper sense of urgency, anyone could have had that exchange in less than 30 seconds.

Then the Flag could have been thrown and ...

sMartz: (to the ref) "We are challenging the ruling on the field that the Cardinal who recovered the ball kept possession. The Cardinal was not down by contact. There were two fumbles on the play."

Now whether there was conclusive evidence to show that McCollum had the ball is another story ...

I try. I'm always striving to ruin someone's day with another post that needs translation ... ... I think I'm slipping into depression now that I'm accused officially of hating sMartz ...
