    Chest-Muscle Injury Limits Laurinaitis

    Chest-muscle injury limits Laurinaitis

    Tuesday, August 9, 2011

It might be no big deal, but it was a bit jarring to see James Laurinaitis, the St. Louis Rams' seemingly indestructible middle linebacker, sitting out some of the drills at practice today.

Coach Steve Spagnuolo explained that Laurinaitis was limited because he'd aggravated a pectoral (chest). "We don't really know what it is right now," Spagnuolo said. An X-ray was planned.

In the good news department, wide receiver Danario Alexander was back on the field after missing two days with fluid on his knee. Also returning were defensive tackle Jermelle Cudjo (back), tight end Fendi Onobun (groin) and defensive end Eugene Sims (concussion).

Cornerback Jerome Murphy, who broke his ankle in practice Friday, is to undergo surgery Wednesday. The club will wait for the results before deciding whether to place Murphy on IR.

The Rams continue to shuffle their roster, adding a pair of undrafted rookies: tight end DeMarco Cosby of Central Missouri and cornerback Jeremy McGee of Mississippi. Both practiced Tuesday. To make room for the newcomers, the club released wide receiver Jalil Carter and kicker Todd Carter.

Several media outlets reported that free-agent linebackerBen Leber had agreed to terms with the Rams. But team officials said that as of Tuesday evening, no deal had been reached.

He'll need to rest off that chest if he wants it to feel better, putting too much stress on a pulled muscle is bad for him in the long run so don't be surprised if he's out cold in the first week of the preseason.

Luckily, he only pulled it 4 1/2 weeks before the season starts.

Please in the name of all things holy in Heaven and everything the good Lord in all His wisdom created, please don't be a tear.

Leber has never played the middle to the best of my recollection. It's probably no big deal.

The timing seems a little worrisome. Nor does Leber being an OLB reassure me. I think you'd see Vobora or Diggs, maybe even Diles if he's a quick study, QBing the defense in Lau's absence so adding a quality OLB to replace one of them makes sense.

Let's hope it's a short absence but kudos to Devaney for acting quickly & prudently.

Just saw a report of a tweet by JL , (in the PD's chatroom), that his chest is going to be fine, FWIW.

Man I hope so - that's a loss I don't even want to think about.

Edit: (Just noticed this is post 777 - very lucky numbers here in Vegas. Proof JL's gonna' be OK)
