It happens after team ends Saturday practice
BY STEVE KORTE
ST. LOUIS - The St. Louis Rams got a scare Saturday night when tight end Cam Cleeland was involved in a car accident leaving the team's practice facility in Earth City, Mo.
Cleeland was taken to Barnes-Jewish West Hospital for precautionary X-rays after suffering whiplash and contusions.
Team physician Dr. Matt Matalva said Cleeland's injuries didn't appear to be serious.
Matalva and team trainers treated Cleeland at the scene of the accident, which was about 100 yards from Rams Park.
Rams coach Mike Martz and Rams assistant head coach and linebackers coach Joe Vitt also ran out to the intersection of Rider Trail North and Earth City Expressway North where Cleeland's truck collided with a passenger car around 9:30 p.m.
The man driving the other vehicle also appeared to suffer only minor injuries.
Back in late May, Cleeland tried to pull a man out of a burning car near his home in Mount Vernon, Wash.
Cleeland threw dirt on the driver, Timothy Roth, in an effort to douse the fire. Another motorist arrived with a fire extinguisher and firefighters arrived soon after that, but Roth, 22, died later that night.
"It's something that will be with me forever, watching something like that," Cleeland said three weeks ago after reporting for the team's training camp at Western Illinois University in Macomb.
Cleeland was involved in the accident about 20 minutes after the Rams had finished holding a night practice inside their 80-yard indoor field.
They'll practice again tonight in preparation for their Monday night game against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.
"We like to practice the same time we are going to play the game," Martz said. "We'll get two good practices in at that time and get a little acclimated to it."
The Rams' list of injured players who sat out of practice was down to seven, which was the lowest number since the first week of training camp.
Running back Lamar Gordon (ankle), offensive tackle Kyle Turley (back) and Jeremy Phillips (neck), cornerbacks DeJuan Groce (knee) and Robert Cromartie (hamstring), defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy (foot) and fullback Joey Goodspeed (hamstring) were the only players on the Rams' roster who didn't practice Saturday night.
"That part of it was good," Martz said, obviously not pleased with the overall practice.
Asked how the practice went, Martz said, "Pretty dark out there, it's a night practice."
At one point, rookie defensive tackle Anthony Hargrove was kicked out of practice by Rams defensive line coach Bill Kollar. Hargrove was sent off the field and back to the locker room.
Tom Nutten, who signed a one-year, $535,000 contract with the Rams on Friday, took part in individual drills. He was wearing his old No. 61 jersey.
After sitting out a season, Nutten needs to add 20-30 pounds to get back to his playing weight.
It was suggested that Nutten's weight-gain plan should include hanging around with his old buddies, right guard Adam Timmerman and center Andy McCollum, who are known as the "Donut Brothers" for their love of the pastry treats.
"You can gain five pounds just by shaking hands with those guys," Martz joked.

Every Cloud, Has A Silver Lining....
This May Be Good News....
If Cam Cleeland Can't Stay "...healthy..." - The Rams Will Probably HAVE To Keep Mike Brake, On The 53 Man Roster.
Didn't Cleeland Miss MOST of Training Camp - Because of Injuries ??
Well, He Didn't Miss It - But He Didn't Take Part In Actual Practice, Either....
Cam Sure Has Been Plagued By Injuries, During His Football Career !!
I Wonder If The Ram's Coaching Staff Is Making Notes of His Down Time ??
