Unhappy Coakley will return to Rams

    Coakley will return to Rams

    BY JIM THOMAS
    ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
    02/22/2006

After veteran linebacker Dexter Coakley suffered season-ending leg and ankle injuries Dec. 4 against Washington, there was some speculation that he might retire.

But Coakley plans to return for his 10th NFL season in 2006, and his second with the Rams.

"He was one of the first guys to come in and meet me when I was on the job," Linehan said. "He wanted to know how he fit into the scheme of things, and was very positive.

"I really like those veterans that have a good attitude. I was very encouraged with where his mind was, and where he felt that he was health-wise."

Because they have a new head coach in Linehan, the Rams get an extra minicamp this spring. Linehan plans to hold the first of those minicamps before the draft.

He said Coakley may miss that camp for precautionary reasons as he completes his rehabilitation from the injuries.

    Massey signs extension

Long snapper-fullback Chris Massey signed a four-year contract extension Tuesday. Contract terms weren't immediately available.

The Rams also have signed LB Drew Wahlroos, LB Jamal Brooks, OT Drew Strojny, and CB Deandre Eiland.

why the sad face?? Isn't he good? I know he's been in the leage for a while but I think he's still good if he's gonna be healthy, that's great.

Yeah, I'm not sure about the sad face either. He provides excellent veteran depth and leadership.

Oh yea....he really tackled well last year. He was a bust along with Claiborne but I'm willing to see how they do in a new scheme

The sad face is because we gave him a big contract and he sucked it up. And probrably will this year too. He soudn't be starting next year. Good Backup at best now.

I dont think his contract was that big at all. It was a reasonable to modest contract for a team with a desparate need in a very tight salary cap situation.

This is good news. I'm not convinced that Claiborne and Coakley were that bad. I saw some good things from both, but I didnt see much playing time from either. (Gee, thanks a lot Marmie) I'd love to see them back in a new scheme. At the worst, they will provide very solid depth.

hmmmmm lets see you guys.... did polley and thomas do good in marmie's scheme???? hell no they didnt. clairbone and coakley were not on the field enough to make decisions on them as busts. for the most part, i thought they did a good job at stopping the run when they were in there. with a new scheme i look for results that the ram FO were looking for last year out of these players

Dude, we got him for peanuts.

Coakley (Rams) --- 5 years, $14.5 million ($3.0 mil bonus) --- $2.9 mil avg. And we're paying him less than that right now since his contract is back-loaded with numbers that both parties know he'll never reach.

You also have to consider his injury. That wasn't a little jam your toe incident it was a broken ankle and leg I thing.

I'm with Gc let the guy play and see what he has left, better to see, than take the cap hit. I like too the vet leadership that he brings to the table..
