Rams | Coakley Agrees to Five-Year Deal - from www.KFFL.com
    Wed, 2 Mar 2005 11:22:55 -0800

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the St. Louis Rams have reached a five-year, $14.5 million contract with free agent LB Dexter Coakley (Cowboys). The deal also includes a $3 million signing bonus. Coakley will count $4 million against the Rams salary cap in 2005.

That's a good start - if its only the start.

If the Rams can get Coakley and Claiborne for the price of Hartwell, for example (which may not be unrealistic), that could be a very good move.

He's 5'10, 231 (kind of built like London Fletcher) and is quick and a good tackler. Has not missed a game in three years. He has averaged about 90 tackles per year. Downside - he'll be 33 when the season starts.

"Bigger" does not mean "taller." 231 lbs. on a 5'10" frame is pretty big. Tommy Polley, for example, is several inches taller and weighs less.

$4M Cap figure wrong - $3 million signing bonus prorated

The cap figure must be wrong. It says he signed with a $3 million signing bonus, and that he would EARN $4million in the first year of a $14.5 million contract. That means his 1st year salary is $1 million, and the bonus should be spread over 5 years (it might be shorter with the new CBA so lets say 3 years to be conservative and make the math easy), so at most his cap number this year should be $2 million ($1 million in salary and $1 million in prorated signing bonus).
