Coats: Bradford throws for 4 TDs in scrimmage

Bradford throws for 4 TDs in scrimmage
By BILL COATS | Posted: Sunday, August 7, 2011 4:00 pm

After a slightly sluggish start, St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford perked up, completing 13 of 20 passes for 140 yards and four touchdowns in the team's only scheduled scrimmage of training camp.

The 80-minute session drew about 6,200 to Lindenwood University's 7,450 seat Harlen C. Hunter Stadium.

Here are some other stats, all unofficial:

    *No. 2 QB A.J. Feeley: 6 of 17, 117 yards, 1 TD, 1 interception.

*WR Danny Amendola: 8 catches, 70 yards, 1 TD (12 yards).

    *WR Mike Sims-Walker: 3 catches, 71 yards, 1 TD (23 yards).

*WR Brandon Gibson: 3 catches, 31 yards, 1 TD (11 yards).

*TE Billy Bajema: 3 catches, 47 yards, 1 TD (20 yards).

*RB Cadillac Williams: 6 carries, 16 yards.

*RB Jerious Norwood: 3 carries, 7 yards, 1 catch (10 yards).

*RB Keith Toston: 3 carries, 4 yards.

*RB Steven Jackson: 1 carry, 3 yards.

The defense controlled things early, as the offense struggled with new coordinator Josh McDaniels' system. When the offense went back to more familiar calls, it perked up.

It was especially impressive in a red-zone session, scoring touchdowns on four of five opportunities. "Red zone was important for us, and we try to do as much of that as we can," coach Steve Spagnuolo said. "So that was encouraging."

Spagnuolo said Bradford looked "very confident. And I don't really think that the new system is bothering him very much. Now, there's a long way to go. But I just like the interaction between Josh and him and how the huddle's been operated. It's been pretty good so far."

Looks like Amendola is back into his familiar "Old Reliable" role. Good to see Sky-Walker making some big plays, too. Can't wait to see this new offense in action!

What Bradford did best in this scrimmage was lock into his receivers and continually look for underneath WR's at the expense of others wide open down the field. He did this the second part of last season also.

If he continues to do this he is going to throw interceptions at an alarming rate and it's going to be a very long season.

Sounds like to me we still don't have a true number 1 on our team. I was hoping Mike Sims Walker would do the job.

The second part of the season, we didn't have avery and clayton, our number 1 receivers.

We havent had a #1 since torry holt. And clayton got hurt in week 4...... Avery never made it to the regular season. But by your analyst it was 75 percent of the season

Ive noticed this too. I think it has a lot to do with Sam getting used to the speed of the game. The pass rush getting to him, since he has been a Ram is a big difference to the college game at Oklahoma. Back then he had all the time in the world behind a great line to go through all his progressions unflustered.!
A good set of receivers if Im not mistaken also. IT MUST HAVE BEEN A TRUE RUDE AWAKENING PLAYING IN THE NFL FOR THE RAMS. He will get there, Im sure. But I wouldnt expect miracles just yet until he gets better receivers. Our D is what will make us a NFC WEST champion this year, improved red zone O will play a big part too.?
