Danny Amendola, Dashon Goldson Fuzzy On OT Rules

Danny Amendola, Dashon Goldson fuzzy on OT rules

Funny but true fact of NFL life: Overtime rules remain a shadowy area for many players.

Donovan McNabb became the poster boy of this reality in 2008, when he admitted he didn't know a game could end in a tie. Four years later, a new overtime system is in place, but the same lack of awareness persists.

St. Louis Rams wide receiver Danny Amendola was a stud in his return to lineup on Sunday, finishing with 11 catches for 102 yards in a 24-24 tie with the San Francisco *****. Amendola believed he had more time to pad those stats.

Amendola just told me he thought there was going to be a second overtime. Didn't know it was over till he heard from an official.

    Amendola wasn't alone.

"I didn't know you could tie," ***** safety Dashon Goldson said, via the Bay Area News Group. "When I saw both sides walking onto the field, I was like, 'Where's everybody going?'"

In fairness, these are unusual circumstances. The NFL has had just five ties since 1990. Coincidentally, Amendola was on the playoff practice squad of that Eagles team McNabb piloted to a tie in '08. That was the last deadlock before Sunday.

Perhaps it's time for NFL training camps to include a Scantron test of some kind on the subject. After all, knowledge is power.

One would think after seeing the Bengals- Eagles tie in 2008 in Cincinnati 13-13 that games DO end in ties. Like how can you not know that basic rule by now!

IMO, there is no excuse to have an NFL game end in a tie. The league should put an overtime system in place like the NCAA did, where ties are eliminated and each team has a reasonably equal chance to win.

I have to say they need to change the rule and play until someone wins. How stupid is it when a professional sporting event can end in a tie. This could have been an epic game of it went to a second overtime IMO.

edit.. I must have been writing this while Mike said the same thing.
