Darby messed up but still flashed greatness

I know that Pit and Gado are in the headlines for doing real well and I do agree that Darby didn't have a great game, but I don't think he did as poorly as everyone is insinuating. He DID completely mess up on picking up the blitz a couple of times, but for the most part, when he got the ball in his hands to run he looked QUICK AS HECK! He can really move. And the problem of not getting many yards seemed to come from the lack of holes that were created for him on the plays where he ran.
I'm not saying he had a great game but I do think he's talented and I do hope that the give him another chance to prove himself as a #2 before they pull him down on the depth chart. I saw him do some really great things in training camp practices and in games last year. One cool thing about this kid is that he can catch real well. I've seen him numerous balls on slants, etc from 20 yards away. I think he's valuable as a special teams guy as well. So we'll just have to see what he does in the game.

I will agree with you, Darby is a quick a guy with the ball in his hands. I've said it before, but when I went to the second niners game, he looked like the fastest guy on the field. But it is apparent though that the guy can't block to save his (or Marc's) life. IMO he is more of a specialist, a scat back type of guy. Pittman is more of the complete backup.

Disclaimer: ok so the guy can't pick up exotic blitzes in pre season, not ready to write him off completely, but I'd rather see a tightend stay into block instead of Darby.

I agree with all of the above. I just hope the coaches don't close the book on him because of one bad game. It seems like undrafted, no-name guys only get one chance in the league, when draft picks and over-hyped guys get many. We'll see.

I actually think one of the sacks on Bulger came when both Darby and McMichael were staying in to block

I'm not going to write him off yet. He played pretty well last year.

But, if he doesn't work harder than the other two, then he's history....

Historically, Darby is great at picking up the blitz. He'll turn that around I'm sure. That's why you practice.

Pittman will likely not make the final roster. They'll take 4 RBs and he's going to have a very difficult time beating out the rookie IMO.

Darby had an off night against a very good blitzing defense. He's always been good at blitz pickup and the guy has great moves. He will be fine. Pittman looked explosive, but I think he will be the odd man out simply because of the three backs he's the only one that cant help anywhere else other than running back. You can put Gado at Fullback and Darby returns kicks which makes them much more valuable
The Roman and The Prince. Playmakers until the end.

Nice avatar, do I hear a Roll Tide?
Darby was always solid at Alabama, his lack of offensive production during his senior year was due to poor play on the offensive line, and the type of system he was in. I'm not quite sure he was being used right anyway.
Plus, as said, Darby can return kicks pretty well, and Gado can line up at FB, so unless Pittman just shows he can flat out change a game (in a good way for us of course, lol), he could be the odd man out.
