Day One Falls Right For Rams Etc
As the Rams GM Billy Devaney said today, "Sometimes the best trades are the ones you don't make." Once his team had taken their biggest need in Jason Smith, they started hoping they could fill their second, middle linebacker, with Ohio State star James Laurenaitis, who would be exactly the kind of linebacker Steve Spagnolo wants.
His ability to play in pass defense made him a better fit than USC's Rey Maualuga, and his productivity, desire, and character fit right into the Rams pattern for players they want on their team.
As picks went off the board, Devaney and Spagnolo started making calls, to see if a deal up to make sure they got Laurenaitis was out there. Aparently, several teams turned the Rams down, but then a couple safeties went before them in round two, and there was their guy without having to make a move.
Tomorrow will provide the real test as to how good this draft will be, but there is no doubt, the Rams filled two huge needs without reaching at all.
Some teams seem to have really been smoking something today, with the weird drafts of the Browns, Raiders, and Dolphins. The Bengals once again went ofr perhaps the two most questioned talents, OT Andre Smith, and Maualuga.
Al Davis is clearly senile, first taking Darius Heyward-Bey over Michael Crabtree and Jeremy Maclin, and then taking a safety from Ohio U. in round two. pick 47, that Mel Kiper rated the 73rd best SAFETY.
Two teams traded their 2010 first rounder for a second round pick this year, and as usual, New England traded down again and again, and still got some very good players.
After their second pick, Devaney said he expected the rest of the round and round three to be guys going all over the place, some way earlier than many have them ranked, and he was right on, with some of the head scratchers going off the board in round two.
So now the Rams will pick second on day two, with Detroit ahead of them.
Here is my list of guys I hope they snag. They could deal down a few picks for the right deal, but I like the way it sets up, based on our needs
WR Juaquin Iglesias
WR Louis Murphy
RB Shonn Green
DE Michael Johnson

It wouldn't hurt if the Rams could find another quality linebacker.
Iglesias wouldn't be a bad pick for the Rams in the 3rd round.
Lets see if the Rams do some reaching tomorrow.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

Boy, Devaney and Co. never seem to disappoint under scrutiny huh? Not only do we fill the void at LT with Jason Smith, but grab a steal in the second with Lauranaitis. I'm just anxious to see who the Rams draft tomorrow to cap off an off-season to remember.
