I heard the news this morning on NFL Radio. He played before my time, but it was amazing to hear how much admiration there was among fans of all teams for his contribution to the game... except 1 Whiners fan that called in to say he hated Deacon "because he played dirty." Just made me hate the whiners even more.

    Have fun sacking angels Deacon.

Calling in to a radio show to say you 'Hate' someone the day after their passing, just for playing a sport in a way that everyone did in that era (The 'head slap' was legal then) is a disgrace.

Irrespective of the team you support.

Deacon Jones dead at age 74

    RIP Deacon.

I was fortunate enough to watch him play and I actually had the pleasure of meeting him after a round of golf in Anaheim Hills years ago. He was an amazing guy and a great story teller. I could sit and listen to him tell football stories all day. Funny guy with a great passion for people, football and life. He became an instant Rams favorite of mine that day at the course. I will buy a jersey with his number on it to wear this year in his honor.

Deacon may have invented the sack, but this years Rams defense is going to REINVENT the sack!!!! We tied for the lead in sacks last year, perhaps an NFL record this year! Go Rams!

In a press release issued today by the Office of Human Affairs in Heaven, God was quoted as saying "After three straight years of disappointing performance in the playoffs against other worlds, mainly attributable in my mind to lack of pass rush, I had no choice but to bring Deacon Jones to Heaven. Clearly the greatest pass rusher in the history of the game on earth, I strongly believe that Deacon will help us attain the All-Worlds, All-Galaxies Championship that has recently escaped our grasp"

God bless Deacon and his family, our thoughts and prayers are with them. One of the five greatest players in the history of the franchise, now reunited again with Merlin Olsen above.

    Ramming speed to all

Wow, getting this news is like a head slap. Deacon Jones is THE Rams icon, and quite possibly, THE NFL icon. Great player, great person, GREAT Ram. God Bless him.

Not many players can say they changed the way a professional sport is played, you did and changed it for the better!

This makes me so sad. He was one of my all time favorite Rams. He's probably the biggest reason I started loving football. What saddens me even more is that the Redskins, not the Rams, reported his passing 1st. I'm not ok with that at all.
That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!!

A very sad day for Rams fans and all NFL fans for that matter. Deacon was one of a kind. He changed the position of DE in a radical manner and the way football is played today.

    He will be missed.

The Fearsome Foursome is now down to one remaining member, Rosy Grier.

I was kind of taken aback by that as well, but I think it was probably due to the fact that Redskins GM Bruce Allen, and the entire Allen family, were considered part of Deacon's extended family. They were all extremely close, and it would not surprise me if Deacons family wanted Allen to make the announcement.

A sad day indeed. A bit of me passed this morning upon hearing of Deacon's passing. He was the main reason I got into rooting for the Rams. His contribution to the game was so different from the offensive skill players that dominated at that time, except for perhaps Ray Nietzsche, and made the watching football more interesting. To know that 3 of the Fearsome Foursome are again together is bittersweet. Thank you for what you have given me.

    Go Rams!

Several of us had the privilege of being in attendance when Deacon's jersey was retired in 2009. I'm glad the Rams gave him his due a few years before he passed so he could enjoy the well-deserved honor.
