Re: Deacon Jones rips St. Louis Rams for not retiring his No. 75
No doubt Deacon certainly earned the honor with his play, but if you've followed the Rams for as long as I have, you know it's really no suprise.

As well he should!Deacon Jones rips St. Louis Rams for not retiring his No. 75
HUbison nailed the question -- this jersey should have been retired two, three decades ago. Easily deserving. Talk about a blatant error by whomever takes care of this in the NFL.
One of the premier DEs of all time (if not the best)!!!
* All Pro. / H O F.
* 11 years a Rams DE phenomenon
* Sacks galore, the epitome of sack! Terror of backs.
* Fiercest of the Foursome; an exemplary tackler and QB sacker.
Good grief!
So he played a couple of years in SD and one in D.C. Big deal. Dickerson? Faulk?
I hope the Rams do get this number retired. 'Long overdue' is a crass understatement.Last edited by RealRam; -04-22-2009 at 03:35 AM. Reason: Smiley

Deacon is a legend.
Of course, the LA Times may have been a little short on sport stories during this limbo week before the draft, but former Rams No. 75 is always a blast to talk with. ...As long as one is careful not to get him too excited; he may want to head-slap you silly.
Better get that jersey retired!Last edited by RealRam; -04-22-2009 at 03:53 AM. Reason: Photo

Deacon is part of a very elite / extraordinary small group of NFL DEs. Rams need to retire jersey 75.Posted by Chris58, June 04,2008
This may be old news but last night I caught the last few minutes of the NFL Network's show naming the top 10 NFL pass rushers of all time.
Deacon Jones was named #1 all-time.
This is pretty remarkable because he played in the days when "sacks" (Deacon's own term for what he did to QB's) were not kept track of. Dick Vermeil estimated that he probably had over 225 sacks. Deacon said that in 1967 he had 26 sacks in 14 regular season games and 6 in the post season. In 1968 he had 24 more. So in just a two year span he had 56 sacks. So it's easy to think he had well over the current record (I think it is held by Bruce Smith with 200 or so).

Maybe an official petition is in order?

Re: Deacon Jones rips St. Louis Rams for not retiring his No. 75
I agree with Deacon, the best DE in NFL history should have his jersey retired.
I think part of why he always sounds angry is a bit of him putting on. I've seen interviews with him, and he'll talk about killing a QB or something, and he's got a little smirk on his face sometimes.
Of course, when he played, his attitude was "I'm killing your QB and anybody who gets in my way," and you can tell he still has some of that fire in him.
Maybe this will get some attention in the front office and something will be done.
