The Decline of Sportsman like Conduct

This thread is not aimed at the players but the fans.

It has seemed to me that this season has seen a decline in sportsman like conduct in the fans. My family has made a tradition for the past 4 years to load up every sunday and go to a sports bar to watch my rams and my parents steelers. However this sunday watching the steelers bengals game i heard somthing that disgust me, a steelers fan shouts at the tv "I wish someone would just hit the ****** palmer in the knee again" obviously refering to the play off game a few years back when a steelers lineman hit palmers knee resulting in him being out for over a year. I called the guy out on his comment and he mumbled something and didnt say anything for the rest of the game. Then i come on the boards today and see this post.

That is a reply to rumors of bulger being out for the season. What has happend to us fans that we thirst for injuries to people who are providing us entertainment?

I appreciate your sentiment and point well taken. You made it very plain, these guys are providing entertainment. However, when frustration sets in us people can be cruel and unkind.

I apologize for humanity, but on this site frustration is the main contributor behind ill will on Bulger. You are right on.

I guess at this point we have to trust our head coach with his decision without his hand being forced. If anyone knows what is best for this team it is him, he gets paid for it. If we don't like it, forfeit the season and bandwagon on the Jets with Sanchez or Vikes with Favre.

This is our team, like it or not.

C'mon why go Raider fan on him. A simple rebuke would have got his attention. 2 wrongs don't make a right or something like that.

This is a problem that is widespread. It starts at the youth levels of sports, where parents are out of control with their comments, negative chatter and actions (to the point many youth leagues now have parents sign "pledges" promising to behave themselves). Then comes high school, where the parents lack perspective, try to live their life through their kid, stalk the sidelines bad mouthing the coaches & other kids and generally show they have no life whatsoever. And if they do this at events where admission is free or only a couple of bucks, you can imagine the entitlement they feel at a game where they're paying hundreds of dollars for the privilege.

Civility and manners have declined significantly- especially here in the northeast where I live- where many people have too much money and a heightened sense of self-importance. And God forbid you call someone out for bad manners- the responses range from cursing you out to physical violence.

Being berated for wearing the opposing jersey in a stadium, cheering for other guys to get hurt and behaving boorishly shouldn't be tolerated. And if you're incapable of going to a game without getting bombed, you're a loser.
