Both. The offensive scheme was specific to Martz. Another coach couldn't have come in and done the same thing. On the other hand, Martz couldn't have pulled off that scheme without the exceptionally talented and intelligent players he had. Coaches don't win championships. Quarterbacks don't win championships. Teams win championships.

Did Columbus take his ship to the Americas? or did his ship take him to the Americas?

I hope you have not had too many sleepless nights over this.

Martz is an offensive genius, geez look what Detroit started doing late in the year. He also had the weapons here in STL to pull off what he wanted.

So, basically it's both......sorry Martz haters.

    BTW Fred, AWESOME avatar.

Is this in the vein of, "What came first, the chicken or the egg?", and whose the chicken and whose the egg?

No matter what you think of Mike Martz's personality,he is undeniably an offensive genius. Some of the things he came up with were wacky and hadn't been seen before.Having said that he had the tool's to do it with,so in conclusion they probably go hand in hand and Martz helped the offense and vice-versa..

Re: Did Martz take the Rams to the superbowl or did the Rams take Martz?

I would have to say that Martz had the right idea (system?) at the right time and the right players to carry out his scheme(s).

Martz' downfall, IMHO, was the inability to adapt during a game to exploit an opponent's tendencies and the fact that th eleague was developing strategies to slow down the Rams' vertical game.

The usual losses of personnel suffered by a succesful team tends to make it hard to remain a contender but every team has to overcome the loss of players chasing the ever larger paycheck.

It was a mixture. Remember, that 1999 team defines "Team of Destiny." Everything seemed to come together at the PERFECT time. Kurt Warner comes in at QB, Marshall Faulk and Adam Timmerman are acquired, Dick Vermeil changes his coaching style, etc...

Re: Did Martz take the Rams to the superbowl or did the Rams take Martz?

I would have to say that the Rams got there because Martz's offensive scheme was a perfect fit for the players he inherited. I would also say they got there despite him and his inability as a head coach to adapt during a game. I still believe he cost us one, if not two Superbowl rings.

raiderhater.....he did not inherit anything he didn't have a big hand in constructing.

    1. Bruce was ready to bolt out the door after 1998. He did not like playing for DV. Martz was Bruce's WR coach the last year the Rams were in LA.

    2. After the 2000 season in which the defense was almost as bad as last years Rams, he blew it up and reconstructed a defense that assisted the Rams in going to the Super Bowl. You don't think that was a major HC accomplishment? If not, then I won't waste my typing minutes anymore.

Re: Did Martz take the Rams to the superbowl or did the Rams take Martz?

The game is played on the field, so ultimately it's the players that either win or lose. However, the players that went to the Super Bowl and the plays that got them there are the responsibility of Mike Martz. Say what you will, but I feel certain that Faulk & Holt would never have been Rams; Bruce would have left; and KW would have been backing up Jeff Hostetler in '99 without Mike Martz. Just my opinion.

    And for the record....

Tx, big guy, I know you're frustrated with the D, but that 2000 season was much worse than the 2006 team.

Re: Did Martz take the Rams to the superbowl or did the Rams take Martz?

They weren't THAT much worse bison....you can't be much worse than last year. However, is it a coincidence that prior to Mike Martz joining the Rams, this club was the worst NFC team in the 90's. Then, with Martz here, this squad goes to the playoffs 5 out of 7 years.

    Hmmmm......
