Does Sam Bradford have enough weapons to get Rams to playoffs?

    By Nate Davis, USA TODAY

Even though offensive rookie of the year Sam Bradford only has one NFL season under his belt, he makes the St. Louis Rams the only team in the NFC West that currently enjoys a settled quarterback position. But that doesn't mean GM Billy Devaney is resting any more easily.

"Obviously we're delighted with the progress Sam is making," says Devaney. "But we have areas we have to fix. There are some places that cause me to lose sleep."

Devaney won't specifically identify what areas of his team are causing his insomnia, but he has taken measures to help Bradford.

Following Pat Shurmur's departure to become the Cleveland Browns' head coach, Devaney hired deposed Denver Broncos head man Josh McDaniels as his new offensive coordinator in January. Three months later, the GM allotted three of his first four draft picks to last year's 26th-ranked offense.

Yet Devaney maintains he doesn't necessarily make assisting Bradford his top priority, evidenced by his choice of North Carolina DE Robert Quinn in Round 1.

"Are you hellbent on weapons for Sam? My answer is we have to help the Rams," says Devaney. "We went offense after (Quinn), but it wasn't by design.

"By no means do we say we have to help Sam. Sam says (do) whatever you have to do make our team better."

Yet Devaney hopes his Bradford-driven passing game is improved by the arrivals of Wisconsin TE Lance Kendricks (second round), Boise State WR Austin Pettis (third) and Hawaii WR Greg Salas (fourth).

Bradford lost receiver Donnie Avery to a preseason anterior cruciate ligament tear in 2010, then watched Mark Clayton succumb to his own knee injury after a strong opening month.

Clayton is now a free agent while Avery and second-year man Danario Alexander (who's history of knee operations prevented him from being drafted in 2010) remain questions.

Yet Devaney feels like he might have some answers.

"Kendricks was a good fit for us, the way Josh McDaniels visualizes using him," Devaney says. "His forte is the passing game. He's got really good athletic ability, hands and is a smart guy."

He envisions Pettis and Salas as reliable targets, who can get up the field once the ball is in their hands.

That should be welcome news to Bradford, who didn't have a teammate amass as many as 700 receiving yards or four touchdown catches in 2010.

"We wanted to add some juice to our offense," says Devaney

He said after the draft that the lack of a backup RB causes him to lose sleep. It'll be interesting to watch how they address that need.

We have receiver talent. I like all of our guys, what worries me is that nobody can relieve the pressure on Jackson. That should be Billys top priority at the offset of FA.

I think the new wide receivers will work out. Even if the talent isn't there Mcd can make just about any wide out produce huge numbers. Look at Brandon Lloyd.
