    Draft Day Surprises

Sems like every year, there is some out of nowhere deal or strange early pick that messes up all our draftnik work.

Here's my list since 2005 of guys taken earlier than expected in mocks, and big deals.

2005 - Pac Man Jones goes 6th overall, Aaron Rodgers lasts till 24th and Alex Smith goes #1 instead of him.

2006 Donte Whitner goes 8th to Buffalo, Ernie Sims 9th to Dtroit, Tye Hill goes 15th to the Rams.
Bobby Carpenter goes 18th to Dallas

2007 - A. Peterson lasts till 7th, Ted Ginn Jr goes 9th to Miami.

2008 = Darren McFadden goes 4th, Vernon Gholston 6th, and Foe Flacco 18th.

2009 jets deal up to 5th and take Mark Sanchez
Darrius Heyward Bey taken ahead of M. Crabtree 7th overall.

2010 - Denver deals for second #1 for Tim Tebow
    DL Tyson Aluahu goes 10th

2011 - Atl deal up big time for J. Jones
Cleveland deals back UP after that deal for Weeden.
    Jags deal up for Gabbert
    J. looker goes 8th, C. Ponder 12th

2012 Jags del for Blackmon, Dallas for Claibore, tons of deals in round one.
Bruce Irvin goes 15th to Seattle

    Re: Draft Day Surprises

It had NOTHING to do if they were great or horrible picks. Didn't you GET THAT?

I was at RAms PArk for every one of these drafts, and I can tell you that there was huge surprise at some picks that were not on anyone's radar to be picked that high.

Some were good picks actually, and when Aaron Rodgers dropped that far EVERYONE was shocked.

Guess you totally missed my point there dude.

I'm surprised to not see #3 overall Tyson Jackson on the list. IIRC, he was being mocked in the teens, even twenties.

Cleveland never dealt back up for Weeden in 2011, they used the first rounder in 2012 from the trade to draft him

I think by the end though, most mocks had him as a possibility there. I know I had him there.

Same thing with Trent Williams. He ascended at the end due to scheme.

    Re: Draft Day Surprises

Personally, I don't think any of those listed under 2008 were a surprise, if I recall correctly. DMC and Gholston were both slotted in that area, and Flacco was expected to go late first. Baltimore moving up to get him wasn't much of a secret at that point.

I remember Whitner being a HUGE surprise. I think I expected him to go at the very tail end of the first, or into the second.

That Aaron Rodgers dropped as far as he did, wasn't a huge shock given the circumstances. As I recall, the folks announcing the draft more or less predicted that due to only one team badly needing a QB (the Whiners), one of the two top guys (QBs) was going to lose out on big bucks. The Whiners didn't show their cards right up until draft day, and Smith ended up getting the nod over Rodgers. (A choice the Whiners now likely regret).

Nowadays, that scenario probably wouldn't occur as the King's Ransom given to QBs back then has been abolished finally! Poor Aaron on that day; it seemed every time a selection was announced, the espn camera folks would show the look on Rodgers face. The old saying: he who laughs last - laughs best might apply now.

I am posting this as a footnote only, specifically concerning Rodgers. I totally "get" your post, and won't soon forget my shock when the Rams were leapfrogged by the Jags (Blackmon). I also clearly remember how disappointed I was when the Rams couldn't find a way to grab Julio Jones the year before.

I am looking forward immensely to this year's Draft Day Surprises. Any predictions Barry?

I'll take your word for it. But there weren't any of the mocks I was looking at. (Which, of course, tells me that I was obviously looking at the wrong mocks)
