Ellard and LeDuc stay as assistant coaches

    By Jim Thomas

At least two members of Mike Martz's former Rams coaching staff will be staying in St. Louis. Wide receivers coach Henry Ellard and strength and conditioning coach Dana LeDuc have been signed to new contracts. Contract terms weren't immediately available.

Ellard, 44, has been on the Rams' coaching staff for the past five seasons after an NFL playing career that spanned 16 seasons, including 11 seasons catching passes for the Los Angeles Rams. Ellard's only previous coaching experience was at Fresno State in 2000.

Ellard had been drawing interest from New Orleans and Detroit but has decided to stay put.

LeDuc, 52, joined the Rams' staff in 1999 after four seasons with Seattle. He's a native of Tacoma, Wash., who spent 18 seasons coaching in the college ranks at Texas and Miami before joining the Seahawks in 1995.

Greg Olson, most recently quarterbacks coach for Steve Mariucci in Detroit, remains the favorite to become offensive coordinator for new Rams coach Scott Linehan. (Linehan will call the plays on offense in St. Louis.)

But it's looking more and more like Jim Bates will not be the next defensive coordinator for the Rams, despite a contract offer in excess of $1 million a year from the team. After being unable to strike a deal despite what they feel is a lucrative offer, the Rams may be moving away from Bates, according to league sources.

Glad to see Henry is staying put. As for Bates, if he's here he's here, if he's not, he's someplace else.

I like him and he'd be a good fit, but if he doesn't want to be here for over a mil a year then ok.

    Give me Jerry Gray instead.
