Seems as if he's been informed about his release. I really liked Cortland too. Maybe we bring him back on a much cheaper contract?

Either he's been released, or someone hacked his Twitter.

Can't say I'm surprised. I do think there is a possibility that we bring him back, but I also think that Alterraun Verner might be Target No. 1 for FA.

Coach Fisher says they'd be interested in bringing Finnegan back at a later date.

All signs seem to be pointing to that now. We really don't have the depth now to rely on just a draft pick.

I bet we go after Verner and depending on if we get him, sign Cortland back or not at vet min.

Was worried it wasn't going to happen. Wouldn't mind one bit if they can bring him back cheap.

He's not coming back here. Rams get more cap relief the higher his contract is someplace else.
If he signs a $3 million per year contract, the Rams get $3 million in savings.

Me neither. You really have to be careful with your passwords these days.

    Jim Thomas ‏@jthom1

And to clarify. Finnegan has been told he is being released. No paperwork has been sent to the league office as of yet.

Immediate cap savings is $4 million on Finnegan for Rams.

But cap savings could grow due to offset language on $3 million roster bonus Finnegan was due third day of league year.

If Finnegan signs with another team for 2014, whatever he makes in '14 counts as additional cap savings.

So if Finnegan signs for $2M elsewhere Rams get additional $2M of cap space. If he signs for $1M, it's $1M more cap space, etc.

Absolutely no shock whatsoever given his lack of production last year and what he was due this year.

    - - Cortland Finnegan. But may be instead terminated.

Finnegan for le$$? Fine! ...Probably not happening though.

Cortland Finnegan will be released by St. Louis Rams

By Marc Sessler | NFL.com/News - Around the League Writer
    Published: March 5, 2014 at 03:57 p.m.

The Rams intimated during last month's NFL Scouting Combine that Cortland Finnegan had a home in St. Louis next season, but his gaudy salary ultimately trumped those plans.

The former All-Pro cornerback tweeted Wednesday that he's done as a Ram.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported that the Rams met with Finnegan on Wednesday to discuss his options for 2014 and beyond, according to Rams sources. One of those options was to take a pay cut, but Finnegan decided to part ways with the club instead.

Finnegan tweeted his impending release as soon as he left the meeting, which included coach Jeff Fisher and general manager Les Snead. The quick tweet meant the news came as a surprise to some members of the organization.

NFL Media's Albert Breer reported that the Rams must wait until Tuesday, after the start of the new league year, to release Finnegan because they don't have the 2013 salary-cap space to do it sooner.

Fisher also told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Wednesday that the Rams remain interested in re-signing the 30-year-old defender at a later date, but not at his weighty $10 million price tag.

His release saves the team $4 million in 2014 while generating roughly $6 million in dead money.

Long before a fractured orbital bone ended his 2013 season, Finnegan's play had fallen off a cliff. Limited to nickel duty, the once-physical and reliable cover man was too frequently torched in coverage for a defense that obviously no longer sees him as a priority.

If he's brought back, it will be on the cheap.
