Fisher expected to hire Bush as linebackers coach/PD

Fisher expected to hire Bush as linebackers coach

Fisher expected to hire Bush as linebackers coach : Stltoday

MOBILE, Ala. • It’s looking like Frank Bush, former linebackers coach for the Tennessee Titans and one-time defensive coordinator of the Houston Texans, is in line to become the Rams’ linebackers coach, replacing the fired Blake Williams.

Bush was fired after the 2012 season by the Titans as part of a staff shakeup there.

He hasn’t worked with Rams coach Jeff Fisher since their Houston Oilers days, when Bush was a defensive assistant and Fisher was defensive coordinator.

Before his two seasons with Tennessee, Bush was coordinator for the Texans from 2007-10.

The only known vacancies on the Rams’ staff are linebackers coach and defensive coordinator.

And Rob Ryan still appears to be the favorite for the coordinator’s job, which should be announced within the next week.

    BLAKE WILLIAMS UPDATE

Like many out-of-work coaches in the NFL, Blake Williams has been making the rounds this week at the Senior Bowl, looking for a job.

Williams was de facto defensive coordinator of the Rams in 2012 after the suspension of his father, Gregg Williams, making perhaps 90 to 95 percent of the defensive calls, subject to veto power by Fisher.

The Rams kept Blake Williams off-limits to media during the season.

When approached by the Post-Dispatch on Wednesday, Williams was polite and cordial but didn’t want to be quoted.

He said he was thankful for his opportunity with the Rams and really enjoyed living in St. Louis during his brief stay. Williams said his father was fit and rested and ready to work again in the NFL after having been suspended for his role in the Saints’ bounty scandal.

Blake signed only a one-year deal with the Rams, so the franchise doesn’t owe him any money.

Many at Rams Park felt he didn’t get along well with the rest of the coaching staff, and that his résumé didn’t match his ego.

More specifically, some think the team’s 36-22 loss to Minnesota, which basically eliminated the team from postseason consideration, was the final straw.

Two long runs by Vikings running back Adrian Peterson were back-breakers, one of which came on what Fisher termed a bad call. The Rams came with a blitz on first down even with Minnesota backed up at its 18. Peterson raced 82 yards for a score and a 14-7 lead the Viking never relinquished.

“We were in the wrong defense, obviously,” Fisher said afterward. “We were expecting pass ... and so I think as coaches we have to take that.”

I said on here then that it was as if the Vikes chose our defensive play for us, because it couldn't have been easier for the offense (specifically, Peterson) to dominate that play the way they did.

I think it's odd we'd pick the LB coach before we nail down the DC.

Normally, I'd agree with that, but in this case, I think this is just another example of "this is Jeff Fisher's defense," not "this is [unnamed DC]'s defense."
