Fisher has a busy week ahead with rookie mini-camp

    Tuesday, May 8th

QUESTION: Who or what do you think Rams coach Jeff Fisher will be watching most closely later this week during the Rams rookie mini-camp?

About two-thirds of the players on the field will be undrafted rookies, but Fisher obviously will have his eyes on the 10 draft picks, particularly cornerbacks Janoris Jenkins and Trumaine Johnson. Are both capable of competing for a starting job right away? That seems to be the expectation.

Ditto for wide receivers Brian Quick and Chris Givens. The sooner they get the playbook down, the sooner they help QB Sam Bradford. This will be their first taste of NFL football, albeit in a minicamp setting.

As many holes as the Rams have on their roster, I would imagine that Fisher’s head will be on a swivel, going from first-rounder Michael Brockers to the rookie WRs, to the secondary to the linebackers to the offensive line.

He may out of habit spend more time with the defense, but I don’t think he will dwell on one area too long.

The Rams brought in an army of young players to look at. While Fisher probably has a feel for his higher draft picks, he and his staff will start getting a better read on later draft picks and free agents. The coaches will start sorting the pile to see which players will have a shot to earn jobs at training camp.

This assessment could increase or diminish their interest in veteran free agents still on the market – or veterans other teams will turn loose in the weeks and months ahead.

After going 2-14 in 2011, I would think Fisher is going to be looking at and involved in everything. Time to kick some .......
