Five things to watch Saturday

By Jim Thomas
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
Saturday, Aug. 16 2008
QUARTERBACK CAROUSEL

Marc Bulger will play most of the first half, and regardless of the pass
protection or other circumstances, needs to do better than his three-for-nine
performance against Tennessee. Trent Green is scheduled to finish out the
second quarter. Bruce Gradkowski will open the second half, with Brock Berlin
closing out the game.

ROOKIE ORIENTATION

After coaches' review of game film, No. 2 overall draft pick Chris Long was in
fact credited with one tackle against Tennessee, so at least he wasn't shut
out. But the defensive end from Virginia obviously needs to pick up the pace.
Long needs to relax and let his talent come through.

ORLANDO'S BACK, PART II

After participating in 17 plays against Tennessee, left tackle Orlando Pace
gets another chance to knock off the rust. He undoubtedly will play more
tonight, and as Pace goes so goes the entire offensive line. With the season
opener just three weeks away, Pace needs to get in game shape.

SECONDARY CONCERNS

Once again, starters Oshiomogho Atogwe (hamstring) and cornerback Fakhir Brown
(shoulder) are out with injuries. With backup safety Jerome Carter expected to
miss tonight's game with a groin injury, and rookie cornerback Justin King
(toe) out for the season, the depth of the secondary will be tested.

THE YOUNG LBS

For the most part, the play of Tim McGarigle, Chris Chamberlain, David Vobora
and Marc Magro left much to be desired against the Titans. (Chamberlain did
have some good moments in coverage.) If they don't improve tonight, the Rams
may start thinking about veteran backup help at linebacker.

I agree on Bulger, I know it is spill milk but why did we not address LB's in free agency.
