Fox Sports reporting Rams to interview...

Gregg Williams. My question is for what?

FOX Sports on MSN - NFL - Redskins fire Williams, Saunders; Blache promoted

"Williams shouldn't be unemployed for long, as the St. Louis Rams have already requested permission to interview him and the Jacksonville Jaguars have shown interest as well."

This could be a mixup with the Saunders thing. Why would they need permission to talk to him if he's been fired?

Hasletts defense has not been steller and they could bring Williams in for DC.
Then get rid of lineham in mid season and promote him.

Well, they could have asked permission before he was fired. I'm wondering the same thing, though, as it would be an odd coincidence if the Rams were interviewing both of the Redskins' recently released coordinators.

They did ask permission to interview both of them. Does that mean Haslet is on his way out?

Sounds like Haslett is gone. He must be getting the ax because I don't think he could leave for another coordinator position. I am not sure about Williams being the right canidate. Redskins seem to spend alot of money on defense and they dont get much for it. He was terrible as the Bills headcoach too.

Because although both Saunders and Williams were told by Snyder that they were being dismissed, their contracts had yet to be officially terminated .. so they technically still needed permission.

Maybe they will give Linehan the ax, promote Haslett and Williams will become DC.

    No Mixup.....found this---http://www.hogshaven.com/story/2008/1/26/162639/760

A person familiar with the selection process told The Associated Press that the Redskins have granted the St. Louis Rams permission to interview both Williams and Saunders for coordinator positions. The person said the Rams had to seek permission because, even though Williams and Saunders were told they were being dismissed, the team hasn't formally terminated their contracts. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly on the subject.

Re: Fox Sports reporting Rams to interview...

Williams was one of the highest paid assistants in the league at Washington. It would be hard to imagine him coming here to be anything less than a coordinator, but he did coach special teams for six seasons in Houston. According to Wikipedia, one of the reasons Williams went to Washington as a defensive coordinator was because Joe Gibbs offered him total autonomy over his defensive players and defensive coaching staff. As a coach with an offensive background, Linehan would probably be willing to grant the same here. You have to wonder what this means for Haslett, especially since towards the end of the season there were some rumors that Haslett may not be brought back for 2008.

Uh, you realize of course the reason the Redskins are in the playoffs 2 of the last 3 years, is because of their defense right? I'm okay with either assistant, though as Nick said there's no way they're less than a coordinator, and it doesn't seem like Linehan is getting fired.

Re: Fox Sports reporting Rams to interview...

I'd have to agree that Williams wouldn't be interviewing for anything less than a coordinator position. I think he has been a very good coordinator, though. It seems like the Redskins have had pretty good defenses most years since he arrived.

2007 - 8th in total defense, 11th in scoring defense
2006 - 31st in total defense, 27th in scoring defense
2005 - 9th in total defense, 9th in scoring defense
2004 - 3rd in total defense, 5th in scoring defense

Word out of Washington seems to be that the players thought he should have been the choice for head coach, so they may be getting rid of him more because they don't want the distraction of having him around with a new guy in charge than because of any shortcoming in his performance as coordinator.

The salaries he and Saunders brought in are worth noting here. The fact that we're putting these guys on our interview list (along with another former head coach in Cam Cameron) may indicate that the ownership and/or front office knows we're going to have to spend to turn this team around.

I wouldn't shed any tears over Haslett leaving. In actuality though, I'd rather interview Jerry Gray who's the Redskins secondary coach. I loved the way he called a defense when he held that position in Buffalo. Plus, he's a great Ex-Ram. How can you go wrong?
